Everybody knows the present-day nasties of the gaming world, like the Infected of The Last Of Us, with Stalkers who slink around their prey and the Clickers able to hear the slightest💛 sound. And while those creatures are fantastic examples of video game cree⛦piness done right, some unsung heroes of the past make as much of a terrifying impression.
Many players even think the limitations of retro games add to the fear factor since there's a disturbing feeling that comes with the pixelated graphics. These horror game monsters prove that advancement doesn't necessarily make a better product.
10 The Scissorman - C🅰lock Tower 🐟
1995's Clock Tower was a revolutionary game for its time, a point-and-click horror adventure that follows a young girl trying to escape an entity known as The Scissorman. Clock Tower takes inspiration from Phenomena, released in 1985. Both mediums feature a black-haired girl and a weapon-wielding antagonist. However, the similarities stop there as the two stories take entirely different paths. What makes The Scissorman so terrifying even by today's standards is the atmosphere built by the game being a point-and-click.
Trying to solve the puzzles while evading this vil🃏lain in a creepy mansion is one hell of a way to spend your Friday night. The Scissorman also has a looming threat throughout as there are many deaths the main character can fac𝓰e and different endings to unlock.
9 T. Rex - Dino Crisis 🎀 💟
It's hard to think of a moment that scarred young players' minds more than the infamous T. Rex jump scare in 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Dino Crisis. The suddenness of this moment can be compared to the dog hallway in the original Resident Evil, another game developed by Capcom. Every encounter with this hefty creature is intense, with it coming as no relief when you have to stay and fight rather than run away.
Dino Cr♑isis is a horror exception being the only majo꧋r entry to feature these creatures in the genre. Some others have tried to capture the fear the dinosaurs of Dino Crisis bestowed on gamers but have failed.
8 Spiderdemon - Doom ✤
What makes the enemies of Doom so captivating is their ability to strike fear into your heart, 💯even with the main character having endless ways to fight back. The maps and curves of the areas allow for unscripted jump scares where an enemy can startle you when turning a corner, moments most will face while playing the games. But one of the creepiest creatures in the Doom franchise is the Spiderdemons.
Giant robotic spider creatures that shoot at Doomguy, moving just like a real spider would, makes for ni🌳ghtmare fuel for arachnophobic gamers everyw🏅here.
7 Biggy 🀅Man -🌺 Splatterhouse
Biggy Man wields two chainsaws embedded into his arm stumps in this 1988 horror classic. Seeing any screenshot of Splatterhouse might leave you thinking it's some 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Friday The 13th ripജ-off with the design of the protagonist Rick Taylor who dons a hockey-like mask nameꦦd the Terror mask.
Rick himself looks pretty creepy, but it's not until Biggy Man's first appearance that the game really shows its horror roots. While having a name that sounds ripped straight from a 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:90s kids platformer, Biggy Man is int🌠imida♈ting in all his chainsaw revving glory.
6 ✃ SHODAN - System Shock ღ
SHODAN is a unique anomaly on this list, a character whose creepy merits aren't from visual or combat aspects, but the terror driven into you through the sound design. With the limitations of a late 90s game, System Shock placed a lot of its horror into its sound, with SHODANs quotes being some of the most horrifying parts of the game.
The constant buffering and echo of her voice, the egotistical drive that comes with her god complex, and a𒈔ccess to facilities in the station from being an AI make for an incredibly dangerous threat ever-present through the two games.
5 Grey Children - Silent H𒆙ill
Being the first monsters encountered in the 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Silent Hill series, they're also one of the most recognizable. Grey Children are short child-like creatures wielding long knives and harboring slits along their faces where their eyes would be. Since symbolism is such a heavy theme in Silent Hill lore, many people speculate the Grey Children to be Alessa Gillespie's perception of classmates who bullied her during school.
This theory is further backed by how 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Grey Children huddle in groups around Harry Ma🍌son, gripping onto his legs and making child-like laughter sounds while attacking him.
4 AM - I Have 𓆉No Mouth, And I Must Scream 🎶
168澳洲幸运5开奖网:I Have No Mouth, And I Must Scream is a strange game following supercomputer AM and the five humans it has been torturing for 109 years since the extinction of the human race. Gorrister, Ellen, Ted, Nimdok, and Benny, the five humans that remain, are tortured in ways that reference trauma from their past, and with AM extending their lives, this torture continues on in gruesome ways.
The game follows these characters as they take part in a 'game' made by AM with the hope of finally escaping the torture they've been put through. AM doesn't look particularly creepy, but its history and quotes in I Have No Mouth, And I Must Scream present a terrifying villain that has stood the test of time.
3 Alien💟s - Dark Seed
Inspired by 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:H.R. Giger's art, Dark Seed is a point-and-click horror following character Mike Dawson who enters an alternate reality appropriately named the Dark World. Inside this reality is filled with Giger's artwork, strange alien creatures called the Ancients who wish to drain all life on earth. Dark Seed launched in 1992, but the contrast of these aliens and the main character's real-life look present an uncanny atmosphere which makes the game events never seem quite right.
The Medium took a similar approach, instead adapting painter Zdzisław Beksiński's work into a story with a paranormal twist.
2 Sae Kurosawa - Fata🃏l Frame 2
168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Everybody loves a good ghost story; they're the perfect line between the veil of life and death, and there's a lot you can do because of this. 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Many Japanese games incorporate gho✨st stories, with one of the scariest incarnations being Sae Kurosawa in 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Fatal Frame 2. Sae was hanged in something known as the Crimson sacrifice ritual, and in the current events of Fatal Frame 2 follows protagonist Mio, appearing in different moments of the game.
Perhaps Sae's most noteworthy feature is the sickening laugh she makes while following the player and how hauntingly she moves towards Mio.
1 🌠 Licker - Resident Evil 2 𓆏
Lickers were one of the best parts of 2019's 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Resident Evil 2 Remake, and the original is just as good. While the remake has the luxury of visual advancements and developer experience, the original is what brought these haunting creatures to the forefront in the first place. Lickers are a blind mutation of zombies, using sound to track their prey, so you have to tread carefully when a Licker is near.
The first look at the Licker still plays great today. Seeing Claire and Leon's reaction to this creature is rather fitting as they are pretty much scared senseless.
