Dystopia is a word often thrown around when discussing science fiction, and with good reason. The major prerequisite of a dystopia is to have near-total or complete societal collapse, and you are a character trying to find a way to survive or change the world for the better. Usually, there's an evil entity that you must overcome for that to happen.
And Scorn, at least on the surface, seems to be going along the same guidelines of dystopia. But by the time you get to the end, you are left with more questioꦯns than answers about the beyond and what is after the point of no return.
Warning: This list will contain spoilers.
10 Where Are We?♏
168澳洲幸运5开奖网:From the beginning, you find yourself waking up and freeing yourself from within a wall of a dark room, emaciated and with no knowledge of who or where you are. There are glimpses of a world on the surface that you find yourself being pulled to, but t🥂hat pull explains nothing.
Everything 🐷outside is decayed and defunct; hundreds of years have seemingly passed by as everything that resembles a building is disintegrating. But where are we? Earth? Somewhere else, maybe? You have no way of knowing e𓄧ither way; by the end, it remains a mystery.
9 𝔍 𝔍 How Are You Alive?
With everything dying and the biomechanical technology failing all its systems from neglect, it's a shock that anything outside of the parasites is alive somehow. Yet you, 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:as the protagonist, live on despite the odds.
It's not often that a human from the wreckage sprouts up and attempts to heed the call of the light, but it's a double-edged miracle each time one can be born. How is it they are being able to be born from dead technology?
8 ꦗ Was Civilization Always This Way?
As you go further into the game, you realize that humans and their... byproducts are used for everything: fuel, experiments, and even the buildings and technology used by you, the protagonist. It's indicative that human recycling has been going on for so long. This isn't what 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:you imagined evolution would be.
It makes you wonder what the state of the world was that they decided that the best course of action was to use humans to run everything. It had some negative, ๊long-lasting side♛ effects on the planet.
7 🐻 Was Immortality Achi✨eved?
Throughout the game, there is overt symbolism of the cycle between life, death, and the miracle of birth before it was transmogrified into a more efficient process for creating life: statues of male, female, and🐼 a hybrid of the two genders were built as though they were meant to be revered for creating life.
A hive mind had been the result of their findings, and despite civilization being completely broken down, the mechanics of adding to the hive mind remained for anyone who made it to the doctor's room. Technically, the hive mind is alive, but can it be called life if they are stagnant?
6 🐷 Did Fusing With The Parasite 🐷Help Or Hurt?
Partway into the game, you come across a parasite that latches onto your body, seemingly trying to keep you alive and granting you 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:the ability to use your weapon(s). A relationship based on survival, right? that only 🦩makes the most sense in this hellish world, right?
Well, it's hard to say. You discover that the parasite was your first protagonist after losing himself to the parasite infestation and turning into what you see in-game. It's possible that all the action he took after that, such as attaching himself to you, was driven by that same impulse to go toward the light.
5 Why Didn't They Delete The Parasites?
Deep in the ground lies a cavern intended for waste disposal for their experiments. The parasites were a byproduct of said experimentation that they felt they couldn't re-engineer into something new. Instead of properly disposing of them outright, they made this cavern 'inescapable.'
Unsurprisingly, they not only escaped but spread their veiny tendrils wherever they went, infecting being and machines alike due to everything being biomechanical and made from humans. Maybe this was the catalyst, maybe not, but it certainly didn't help anyone survive.
4 🃏 Who Were The Rulers ✤Of Those Below?
Nearing the end of the game, you come across the huge, decadent (at least in comparison) 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:castle-like ruins adorned with several statues that look as though they were worshiped. Inside, there are murals dedicated to physically intimate forms of procreation. It was likely they worshiped sex because, at one point, it brought life into the world. As though they thought th꧑at if they prayed and revered it, infertility could be reversed.
It's possible that this fervent belief drove them to do more experiments with their intended carriers below, hoping to have their intentions heard and the infertile curse lifted from them. Or they just felt the need to streamline the process.
3 Would You Try And S✃ave Those You Come Across? 🅠
It's no secret that you have sacrificed a lot to progress, not just your life and limbs (literally) but others who are just existing and minding their dying business. They are humans like you, just different in appearance. Is it crueler to let them live or take them out of their misery?
None evokes the question more than The Crater Queen in chapter four. The last obstacle in your way; you have no choice but to activate the elevator she's wrapped herself around, and cutting her is the only way to get through. She doesn't attack, nor does she seem to even get mad; she simply questions you silently with her eyes. It's visceral and gut-wrenching.
2 What Lies Beyond The Portal? 🅰
A suspicious, peacefully lit portal awaits you at the end of the blood-soaked journey you fought through, and it seems you're finally about to see the end of your suffering. Until it's snatched from your grasp, a fitting turn of events for where you just came from. There is no happy ending for those stuck on this side of the portal.
As you are left sitting there and staring at it, there's a point where you start to wonder what exactly is beyond the misty, purple portal protected by fleshy statues. Is it paradise? A spiritual place of peace? A party, perhaps? It's unlikely we'll find out any time soon, if ever.
1 What Does It All Mea𒅌n?
In Scorn, there's no dialogue, notes, or directions for you to follow. You are left to your own devices to figure out not only how to get out but what it all means for you. Whatever you did or witnessed will be left up to you to interpret. That goes for the story, too.
The story is layered and feels more like a metaphor than something concrete. It can be a real treat to dig through, but the ambiguity will turn off other players. If you get the deluxe edition, which comes with the art book, you'll gain a little more insight into how the society ran in its final days and beyond, but it doesn't quite scratch that itch and leaves you wondering.
