Edgar Wright single-handedly made my week better by confirming that Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is coming to Netflix as an anime. The series will bring back the cast from the original movie – the whole cast – and will be animated by Science SARU. Anamanaguchi, who composed music for the video game adaptation of the original graphic novels, will be scoring the animated series as well, while Brian O’Malley, the creator of the graphic novels, will be writing. This anime isn’t just going to adapt the original graphic novels or Edgar Wright’s film – it’s going to “expand the universe” and more, according to Wright. It sounds like there’ll be deeper dives into the movie’s characters, settings, and maybe we’ll even see them in different points of time. This is all speculation, but I can’t help it, I’m dying to see more than just an announcement trailer.I’m particularly impressed by the fact that Science SARU will be animating the anime. Scott P🌞ilgrim, and Wright’s ♌work in general, is known for having dynamic, almost frenetic camera movement, with whip pans, transitions, and zooms galore. If you’ve seen Science SARU’s work, you’ll realise how well-suited they are to this – their animation is fluid, surprisingly sparse and very evocative.
The studio is most well-known to Western audiences for its work on the incredible Devilman Crybaby, and watching the back has me completely hyped. I’m predicting great character design, maybe with an art style closer to their other show . The fights will be hectic, that’s for sure. In combination with Anaman🦩aguchi’s music, I’m sure the anime will be a multi-sensorial feast.
Another thing that impressed me: they got everybody back. Many of the movie’s cast members were mildly famous when they were cast and have since blown up. Kieran Culkin is now in Succession, which everybody loves apparently (I haven’t seen it). Aubrey Plaza was in the most recent season of White Lotus, and killed it, having previously seen her popularity explode post-Pilgrim through Parks and Rec. Brie Larson and Chris Evans are both, god forbid, now part of the 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Marvel Cinematic Universe. Jason Schwartzman ha♈s continued working with director𝔍 Wes Anderson and been in a bunch of his films. These actors have mostly gone on to have very successful careers – they don’t need this for publicity. It’s not like a shitty sitcom having a reunion episode, it seems to be coming from a place of genuine love for the movie and each other.
According to Wright, the cast has remained friends since the movie was made in 2010, with an ongoing group email with the entire cast on it. He’d suggested an anime adaptation in lieu of a live-action sequel several times over the years, and Netflix reached out to ask to collaborate with him. O’Malley, writer of the graphic novels, said “It’s hilarious. It’s emotional. It’s visually stunning. The action scenes will blow your mind. And there might be a few surprises along the way.” This is the only time I’ll b💛e thanking Netflix sincerely for anything – god, thank you, Netflix. This is going to be so good.
