Thrown into one of the worst possible situations, you'll have to manage resources, fight off gangs, and keep your family safe.
Traits will affect a wide range of mechanics in the game, with different traits for each character. Depending on the situation, traits can either have a positive or negative effect that tips the scale of the game. To make it out alive, you'll have to decide what traits you want and how to give them the best possible effect, determining whether you sink or swim in t🌜he post-apocalyptic worꦬld.
8 Courageous/Cowardice - The Upper Hand In Battle 🌠 ꧟
When most traits turn from positive to negative the change is gradual, slowly ebbing and turning into an issue. The shift from Courageous to Cowardice is abrupt, taking away a big lead at the 💫start of a fight, so keeping Courage positive is a priority.
Making the change is as simple as winning more fights. A big part of keeping a high win rate will be choosing what battles you can't win, recognizing when an enemy is too strong for you at that moment. The Cowardly trait gives an enemy the au🦂tomatic advantage when the fight begins, leaving you to claw your way back with brute force.
7 Proactive/Lazy - Explorinꦦg With🧸 Speed

If you choose to be a homebody and avoid exploring the outside world, your character will come to a crawl, leaving you helpless if an emergency occurs at the shelter while you're away.
Going on expeditions will turn the trait positive and speed things up, making every facet of the game easier to handle. Staying at the shelter will net you fewer rewards anyway, avoidi🦂ng a lot of the choices and combat the game designed to put in your way.
6 Optimistic/Pessimistic - Bringing Home The Loot 🤪
The stress mechanic has to be monitored for every family member, rising if at least three of their five needs fail in time. Luckily, keeping a bookshelf with a good selection can reduce stress along with a good supply of Valium in case of emergencies. Keeping this trait in Optimistic will slow down the buildup of stress and take away the constant need to check the character's needs.
Coming back from expeditions with loot will keep you Optimistic, knowing that all that energy didn't go to waste. The more failed expeditions, the more pessimism starts to creep in, raising stress levels and making the families stress management a constant worry.
5 Hand🦄s-On/Hands-Off - Repairing The Shelter
Throughout your time in Sheltered, you'll notice that structures lose their durability quickly. Slow repairs vary in length and leave you vulnerable if a poorly timed attack comes your way. Crafting and repairing things on your workbench will keep things in hands-on territory and increase your work speed.
Hands-off can lead to a pile-up of repairs that will only increase in emergencies, ultimately leading to resources being stolen and injuries becoming more likely. A slow work rate can also take time away from other important tasks and create a domino effect that ultimately leads to the family's downfall.
4 𒐪 Resourceful/ Wasteful - Getting The Most Out Of Recycling
Throughout the game, certain items will become more important as new challenges appear. The only way to gain supplies without exploring is by deconstructing items you don't use a lot, getting a varying percentage of items back each time. The Resourceful trait will ra💖ise that percentage to over 90 percent, losing almost nothing in t⭕he process.
You have to deconstruct at least 20 items in the shelter before the Wasteful trait goes away, knocking your percentage down to 70 an✤d losing a lot of material every time you replace an item or structure.
3 Hygi🌄enic/Unhygienic - Dirt Comes With The Territory ▨
One of the major stats that will affect your character's stress levels is dirtiness, which increases over time as you stay away from the shower. Starting with the Unhygienic trait, your dirtiness increases at a rapid pace making showers a regular need. Keeping thin✅gs clean in the shelter can help to an extent, but as soon as you step foot outside things always get messy.
The only way to change the trait is by purposefully contracting an infection and not immediately taking care of it, causing suffering that allows your character to resist the effects of dirtiness and carry on. Although leaving your character in a vulnerable state is a risky move, it checks off one more thing you don't have to worry about.
2 ෴ Deep Sleeper/Light Sleeper -ꩲ Making The Most Of Your Nap
Yet another contributor to the stress bar, tiredness can make a character more susceptible to trauma, leading them straight into a catatonic state. The Light Sleeper stat will remain until you sleep deprive your character when the bar is flashing red, slowly changing the trait to Deep Sleeper. During your sleep deprivation, it's important to make sure all your other needs are met to prevent them from slipping into a coma.
During sleep, the character will recover a lot faster when Deep Sleeper is active. Saving time and reducing any unprotected moments to a minimum, early game is the best time to avoid any sticky situa🌳tions whe🐼n stronger enemies start rearing their heads.
1 Small Eater/Big Eater - The Greedy Don't Survive
Food is a hot commodity when the apocalypse hits, drawing in all types of enemies looking for their next meal. You start with a healthy supply that can last the entire game if you fend off the hordes. Starting with Big Eater means you'll need more food to quench their hunger, wasting resources and creating a more needy environment in the shelter.
Starving the character until they become malnourished will change this trait into Small Eater where smaller quantities of food are needed. Keeping food supplies high at all times will give the family some wiggle room even if a group does happen to get through, savi꧟ng♉ a panic if things go wrong.
