The recent Nintendo Mini Direct featured some great news for fans of awesome & difficult JRPGs, as the PS2 classic Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne is receiving an HD remaster, and Shin Megami Tensei V fin🧔ally ha🧸s a release window, with both titles coming in 2021.
Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne (known as Lucifer's Call in Europe) was the first mainline entry in the series to be localized in English. The game swiftly earned a reputation for its bizarre aesthetic and awesome gameplay, as well as its brutal difficulty. It also featured Dante from the Devil May Cry series, whose prominence on the box spawned a long-running meme. Shin Megami Tensei V was announ༺ced during the first Nintendo Switch presentation in 2017, but Atlus has barelyও talked about in the years since, leading some fans to believe that it may have been canceled.
Nintendo held a brief Mini Direct that focused on titles released by third-party developers. Atlus turned out to be the stars of the show, as Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster was announced for a Spring 2021 release on Switch. The HD remaster will add voice acting to the game, and it appears to be based on the third Japanese version of Nocturne which replaced Dante with Raidou Kuzunoha from the Devil Summoner series on PS2.
Shin Megami Tensei V also received a short new trailer, but the biggest announcement was its release date, as the game is coming in 2021. If Nocturne is being released in Spring, then it's likely that V will be saved for later in the year.
Atlus sent out surveys earlier this year that asked fans about ports of its older titles for modern systems. It seems that the company already had plenty of them in the works, with Persona 4 Golden also being shadow dropped on Steam over the past few weeks. Persona 5 helped propel the Shin Megami Tensei franchise to mainstream attention, and it's great t🎃o see Atlus capitalizing on this success by bringing some of its older classics to modern systems.
Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster will be released for Nintendo Switch in Spring 2021. Shin Megami Tensei V will be released for Nintendo Switch in 2021.
