You might not know if you're not into things like anthropology and folklore, but humanity has come up with some pretty wild stuff over the centuries. For about as long as the concept of civilization has existed, people have cooked up all kinds of mythological characters through things like rumors, myths, religions, and more.
These characters form the backbone of the 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Shin Megami Tensei series' massive library of demons. While that library is full of many familiar faces, it's also got some bona fide weirdos from all four corners of the globe. Whether you've heard of them or not, seeing them realized as living demons in front of you is quite an experience.
10 Belp🐎hegor - Wisdom From The Porcelain Throne ܫ
Has anyone ever told you that they do their best thinking on the toilet? Well, Belphegor invented that, and he ain't letting anyone forget about it. Belphegor is one of the seven Princes of Hell, representing the Deadly Sin of Sloth. This is probably why, in all of his SMT appearances, he's firmly planted on his signature porcelain throne.
In addition to his lazy ways, though, Belphegor is also known for being an academic, specializing in the spheres of 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:invention and discovery. Hey, if you were glued to the can 24/7, it's not like you'd have much else to do but dream up new inventions.
9 Adramelech - Voted Most Fabul⛦ous In Hell
Here's something you've probably never thought of: who's responsible for ensuring Lucifer only wears the freshest threads every day? Well, that would be Adramelech, Chancellor of Hell. This guy is all about fashion, and is considered the official supervisor of Lucifer's wardrobe.
According to the Compendium, when summoned into our world, he typically takes the form of a human, peacock, or mule. This is why, in his SMT incarnation, he's depicted as a super-buff mix of all three. He's also known in some circles as the "King of Fire," which is why he carries around that weird little saucepan thing.
8 💧 Man𝔉ananggal - Two-Faced, Two-Bodied
According to Shin Megami Tensei 5's Compendium, Manananggal is a mythological witch from the Philippines who looks like a normal woman during the day, but transforms into a horrifying demon at night. Not only does she sprout wings and turn ugly, but she gains the ability to separate her torso from her legs to fly around more easily. She also gets a long, proboscis-like tongue with which to suck blood from innocents. Fun.
According to an with Atlus character designer Masayuki Doi, Manananggal was added to 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Shin Megami Tensei 5 because he wanted to bring a new, more 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:overtly extreme demon into the mix. Goodness knows a bisected, bloodsucking demon witch fills🌱 that quota and then some.
7 Pisaca - Entirely T🅘oo Many Teeth 🦂
If there's one thing that's guaranteed to make people go "nope nope nope," it's an overabundance of teeth. Why do you think crocodiles are so scary? Of course, even the biggest crocodiles have got nothing on Pisaca in the teeth department.
Pisacas are a subspecies of demon from Hindu mythology that manifest in the presence of lawless, unruly behavior. When it finds a victim, it leaps into its body through its open mouth, and begins attacking them from the inside. That's pretty unpleasant in itself, but supposedly, even just seeing a Pisaca is enough to guarantee your death, albeit in nine months' time.
6 Shiki-Ouji -🙈 A Really Angry Piece Of Paper 𝓰
Shikigami are a class of simple spirits often conjured forth by Japanese sorcerers known as onmyoji. These spirits, summoned forth through a medium of simple paper, are usually used for quick tasks like household assistance or annoying enemies. Shiki-Ouji, however, are like super shikigami. These are the shikigami you summon when a regular shikigami won't cut it.
A Shiki-Ouji's stature and temperament are reminiscent of a full-on demon, which is why in most of its SMT appearances it has powerful stats and the tendency to make howling noises. Basically, imagine a really big, really angry piece of paper, and you've got a Shiki-Ouji.
5 Chris The Car - Just As Weird As When Steven King Wrote It 🌃
While it doesn't happen often, SMT does occasionally dip into the realms of modern pop culture to fill out its demon list. It's not that unusual — what are the novels and films of today if not the modern equivalents of myths and fables? If you're looking for weird stories of demonic entities, it doesn't get much weirder than Christi- sorry, "Chris the Car."
Based on the classic Steven King novel and movie, Chris the Car is a copyright-safe version of the💞 demonic car Christine, which devours anyone it dislikes with its fiery engine of 🌺hellfire. Also, anyone who drives the car for a sustained period starts turning into a stereotypical greaser.
4 Loup-Garou - Not Just A Werewolf, A French Werewolf
Everyone 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:knows about werewolves thanks to pop culture. A dude turns into a wolfy person by the light of the full moon, he's really strong, really beastly, and so on and so forth. But a loup-garou isn't any old werewolf. No sir, this is a French werewolf.
The legend of the loup-garou originated in Laurentian French communities, where it was rumored to stalk through swamps and sugarcane fields in search of naughty folks who disrespected traditions. In SMT, loup-garou also breathes electricity, though that doesn't seem to be based on any actual legends. He just... does that.
3 Bugs - It's Never Too Early To Terrify Your Children
A lot of old fairy tales and folklore were cooked up with the express purpose of frightening children into behaving themselves. It's like telling your kids about Santa, except the point is to make them eat their vegetables or go to bed on time. One classic example of this is Bugs, also known as the Bugbear.
According to Celtic folklore, Bugs was a bear-like goblin creature that lurked in forests, just waiting to swoop in and gobble up children who didn't obey their parents. Likely in reference to this mildly silly origin, the SMT version of Bugs is depicted as a senseless teddy bear with a tummy full of worryingly small skulls.
2 🎶 Preta - Put Some Pants 𒀰On, Please
Pretty much every subset of belief or mythology has its own spin on what we like to call the "little jerk." You know, small-time demons, imps, and spirits that can't do much harm on their own but are annoyingly plentiful. In Buddhist lore, the "little jerk" is the Preta.
These ovoid ghoulies are what happens to humans that lead impure lives and end up dumped into the Preta realm. They don't have much cooking in their heads beyond an unsatiable hunger for whatever they can stuff into their mouths. Judging by how wide those mouths open in most SMT games, that encompasses quite a bit of assorted garbage.
1 Mara - No, Thank You 🦩
Mara is one of the most legendarily bizarre things to come out of the entire SMT franchise, mainline game or spin-off, and that is saying something. You don't really need us to spell it out for you; he's a giant, screaming phallus riding a spiked chariot. He's supposed to be a demon and master of fear from Buddhist mythology, but that's kind of immaterial in the face of the obvious.
Fun fact, in 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Persona 3 and Portable, if you have Mara equipped as your Persona when entering 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:the Velvet Room, Elizabeth and Theodore will offer up some color commentary. In fact, Mara almost always gets some kind of dedic💜ated sidequest in every SMT game he shows up in, and you can bet someone is going to have an understandable reaction to him.
