Whilst not the lord of this repugnant realm, Chernobog is a dangerous sod characterized by his excessive use of Dark magic and Status Ailments. What’s more, unlike most bosses, there is no Leyline before the fight. Make sure you ꧋prepare 🌺long before you cross blades.

Chernobog’s Potentials, Attacks, and Resistances

SMT5 Chernobog Stat screen

Potentials

Chernobog is a master of the Dark arts, and this is highlighted by his +3 Potential with Dark magic, and +4 Potential with Status Ailment related magic. Interestingly enough, his Potentials don’t do much for this fight as he primarily deals Physical damage - which he has no Potential in. Thi𝓡s doesn’t ma☂ke him any less dangerous though.

Attacks

Attacks

Explanation

Dark Sword

Chernobog deals Medium Physical damage, twice, to one target. This attack has a chance to inflict Seal.

Blight

Chernobog deals Weak Physical damage 2-4 times to random targets. This attack has a chance to inflict Poison.

Toxic Spray +4

Chernobog has a chance to inflict Poison on one target. This attack also lowers Defense by one rank for 3 turns.

Fang Breaker

Chernobog deals Weak Physical damage to one target. This attack also lowers Attack by one rank for 3 turns.

Pierce Armor

Chernobog deals Weak Physical damage to one target. This attack also lowers Defense by one rank for 3 turns.

Blinding Strike

Chernobog deals Weak Physical damage to one target. This attack also lowers Accuracy and Evasion by one rank for 3 turns.

Mamudoon +3

Chernobog deals Heavy Dark damage to the entire party. This attack has a chance to instakill if it strikes a weakness. This attack is only used after Chernobog gathers Magatsuhi.

Omagatoki: Critical

All Chernobog's attacks, including Magic-based ones, have a 100% chance of inflicting a C🥃ritical Hit.

Chernobog is tricky. None of his attacks are threatening as they mostly deal Weak Physical damage - usually capping out at Medium, which also isn’t great. Where Chernobog shines is in destroying your party's ability to fight effectively. This is especially true if you don't prepare before the fight. Remember, there is no Leyline near Chernobog. He thrives off the ambush.

Looking at his attacks, Dark Sword is his most devastating. Two Medium damage hits do enough damage to raise the eyebrow of concern, but the true kicker is Seal. The Seal ailment prevents a target from using any skills, spells, or abilities. Thiꦫs functionally prevents a character from hurting Chernobog in any noticeable way.

Blight is also tricky to deal with. Poison damage in Shin Megami Tensei 5 can be dangerous to ignore, and the tick damage can add up over an entire party over the course of a fight. The fact it also deals Physical 🎉damꦡage when applying the poison is just the icing.

Toxic Spray is dangerous simply because it hits the entire party and reduces the party's defense by a whole rank for three turns. Not only are you taking chip damage every turn on four demons, but Chernobog is going to hit harder with all of his attacks.

Fang Breaker, Pierce Armor, and Blinding Strike all fall into the same category - attacks that don’t do much but mess with you. Blinding Strike and Pierce Armor are the most dangerous, however. Blinding Strike will cause you to drop turns more often, and Pierce Armor increases Chernobog's damage.

His final attack, Mamudoon, is a non-issue. He only uses this attack after gathering Magatsuhi a༺nd a single Dark ﷺDamper will shut it down immediately.

Even after reading all of this, you might just write off Chernobog as an easy fight - after all, his damage simply isn’t that impressive per swing. This is where Chernobog throws in the final spanner - he has five turns per round, which means he is laying into your party no🍸n-stop.

This has the added benefit of making him less susceptible to Dampers during a Magatsuhi turn, as he still has three turns worth of critical hitting Physical attacks to throw at you. With this many attacks per turn, that low damage becomes much more threatening as all those debuffs start to stack.

Resistances

Chernobog is a simple soul when it comes to Resistances. He is completely immune to Dark damage but is weak to Light. This is very notable because Chernobog has no way to deal Dark damage outside a Magatsu💙hi turn, which makes p💛icking a party much easier.

SMT5 Chernobog Light attack

The key to defeating Chernobog is to hit him hard, whilst keeping your party healthy. There are several ways to do this, but hitting him with Light magic and casting plenty of Dekundas is the most obvi✅ous. Thankfully, there ✱are plenty of demons capable of pulling this off.

Just remember, you don’t want a demon who is weak to Poison or Seal, as this will grant bonus turns to a 💟boss who already gets a handful o🅷f turns per round.

Yoshitsune

Yoshitsune is the nuclear bomb of mid-game Shin Megami Tensei 5. With a fantastic 💞stat line, easily transferable resistances, and a great move set, Yoshitsune simply pullsꦏ his weight in any boss fight.

He is particularly good at fighting Chernobog, however. With access to Retaliate, Yoshitsune will punish Chernobog for using Physical attacks. He also has the Unique attack Hassou Tobi which hits eight times and has a 100 percent chance to deal critical damage. He will be taking large chunks out of Chernobog's health pool whilst granting extra turns for the party - perfect.

Anubis

Provided you have been keeping on top of Anubis’ leveling up, he is an excellent demon for this fight. Considering pumping a bunch of Grimoires into him and maybe even some Sutras. Anubis' skill set and Resistances are good in general, so keeping him useful is a good resource investment.

In this fight, in particular, Anubis is immune to Dark damage and deals heavy Light damage with Hamaon. You could also transfer Light Pleroma and Concentrate, making him even more dangerous.

Flauros

Flauros is an absolute beast of a beatstick character. Ro🌼lling in with a great stat line, a Resistance to Dark, he is the perfect candidate for the Chernobog lineup. His damage, however, is where it truly shines.

Having access to the devastating Severing Bite attack, a Heavy Physical attack that deals greater damage on critical, and Critical Aura, a buff that makes his next attack a guaranteed critical hi🌸t, he simply wrecks face in this, and most fights.

Dominion

Dominion is fantastic for this fight because she is both a potent support piece, but also more than capable of dealing heavy Light damage. This lets her swap between helping out a mate and levying the crushing power of God.

Consider transferring skills like Bowl of Hygieia, Light/Healing Pleroma, and Mediarama to boost her effectiveness in this fight.

Preparing For Battle

SMT5 Chernobog nahobino attacking

Essence Fusion

You will want to transfer Physical resistance onto Nahobino simply because the majority of damage taken will be from Physical attacks. For attacks, you want to be using Kannabi Veil to keep your party healthy and Sakanagi/Hamaon.

Dampers

As always, Dampers are fantastic for this fight. Buying three Dark Dampers for the low-low price of 450 Macca will help mitigate his Magatsuhi turns. You could also consider picking up Physical Dampers to use throughout♛ the൩ fight and burst him down as quickly as possible.

Gems

Light Shards and Light Gems can do work in a pinch if all your Light demons are killed during the fig🐈ht. It’s fairly unlikely this will🔯 happen, but they are there if you need them.

Battle Strategy

SMT5 Chernobog Blocking Mamudoon

Chernobog is difficult, but he can be defeated if you bring the right party and keep them healthy. This means debuff removal should be your highest priority. Not all debuffs are made equal, however.

You can more or less ignore Attack and Defense debuffs until they start to stack higher than one. You absolutely should get rid of any Accuracy debuff the moment it lands. Losing turns is way more impactful than taking♌ extra damage or doing slightly less damage. Get it off your party as soon as possible.

Poison can be a pain but is also manageable with AoE healing. You can use items or spells to remove it, but it shouldn’t be too much of an issue providing you deal with Chernobog swiftly.

Killing Chernobog quickly is pretty easy since he is very predictable. You should consider dropping a Physical Damper every turn for the first three turns and go into the fight with a full Magatsuhi bar. This will result in huge early-fight damage, and the fight should end shortly after. If you have the right Miracles, using these Dampers will also quickly refill your Magatsuhi bar, letting yꦜou do even more burst damage.

Remember, once Chernobog Gathers Magatsuhi, you will need to use a Dark Damper and then Guard with everyone else. The Dark Damper will cost him two turns, but he has five to work with. You don’t want him to land six consecutive critical hits because you got greedy.

Once Chernobog goes down,♒ you can continue and make yourꦉ way to the final boss of the Dungeon - Aurioch.
