Summary

  • Cambridge Dictionary has added more than 3,000 new words in its latest edition, including several gaming terms.
  • These new words include "PvP" and "speedrun".
  • There's also plenty of online slang that gamers will be familiar with, like "copypasta" an "review bombing".

The latest edition of the Cambridge Dictionary has added more than 3,000 new words, including several terms that gamers will be very familiar with. Now, "side quest", "speedrun", "MMORPG", and &🅰quot;PvP" will appear in the dictionary, alongside other terms popularised online.

All of these new additions come with definitions of their own, meaning that PvE is technically in the dictionary too, as it is described as the opposite of PvP. The gaming community's influence can also be felt with other new words and definitions, such as "review bombing" - something that happens quite a lot in our corner of the internet.

Here's The Gamer Lingo That's Made It Into The Cambridge Dictionary This Year

As per the , here's every gaming-inspired word being added to the Cambridge Dictionary this year:

  • Speedrun: "To complete a computer game, or part of a computer game, as quickly as possible, especially by taking advantage of any glitches."
  • Backread: "To read through a series of messages or internet posts that you did not see when they were first created, often starting with the most recent, in order to learn what happened or was discussed earlier."
  • Side quest: "A part of a computer game that has its own aim and story but is not part of the main game."
  • MMORPG: "Abbreviation for massively multiplayer online role-playing game: a computer game that can be played by many people at the same time and in which players control the actions of characters in an imaginary world."
  • PvP: "Abbreviation for player versus player: (in computer games) a game or way of playing a game in which there are many players who are each other’s opponents and can attack each other. If you don’t enjoy PvP, how about PvE, or 'player versus engine'?"

We just spent a few minutes arguing about the PvE definition at work. I thought it was "player versus enem🍒y". Others said "player versus environment" or "player vꦡersus everyone". Absolutely no one suggested "player versus engine".

Other terms, like "review bomb", "OLED", and "copypasta" are often used in the gaming community, while also being used widely online. But on the whole, the influence of gamers can be felt strongly this year, as it looks like these terms we use aren't going anywhere anytime soon.
