Like in many fandoms, one of the most important things about being a 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Silent Hill fan is hating the IP itself. To be more accurate, being a Silent Hill fan is hating - or at least extremely suspicious of - any Silent Hill product that arrived after 2004. And even in 2004, some people online were iffy on Silent Hill 4: The Room. It’s almost a joke now that Silent Hill fans can’t be happy. And I should know! I’m one of them! I both wrote 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:a book about Silent Hill 2 and also wrote like ꦓa histrionic baby about Silent Hill Ascension, which, to be fair, I think I’m still correc🧸t about. But putting aside the decades-long disappointment and the worry and the🐓 deep love of the series, I think the Silent Hill 2 remake deserves a chance from fans. What happens after is on Bloober’s head. Good luck. A week out, I think we should give this game a chance.
That’s not to say I think Bloober’s Silent Hill 2 remake needs my help. Peoඣple seem pumped about it. It’s gotten a lot of press. I’m relatively sure it’s going to sell well, which hopefully kicks off more Silent Hill content. And I’m not just talking Silent Hill: The Short Message which was 70 percent an exploration into the abyss of one’s own failings and 30 percent trying to remember the layout of corridors to escape a flower monster. I liked that, but it was only a handful of hours. It was more like a demo for a Silent Hill game than an actual one which, honestly, it probably kind of was. A testing of the waters if you will. So, for the sheer sake of the series, I hope and optimistically expect Silent Hill 2 to perform well at the… box office? Steam shop? GameStop delivery? I don’t know what we call anything.
I also want to be clear that I’m not saying we should all just blindly buy Silent Hill 2 so we can get more Silent Hill content in the future. Although I am willing for you to make that sacrifice for me. I get why some fans are hesitant. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t always kind to Bloober’s team either. 168ꦜ澳洲幸运5开奖网:I don’t love some of the style changes in the game. And I’ve made fun of 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Layers of Fear before despite buying it on multiple platforms and in virtual reality. Also, the ending of 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:The Medium is controversial for a pretty fair reason: It kind of treats trauma with an odd lack of empathy. That’s not🐻 the greatest! And, at this point, Silent Hill’s ‘trauma’ thing has become such an over-meme'd cliche that the worst game in the series used it as a sticker. Those ingredients can make for a bad soup. I get it. I get why others are hesitant.
Also, we should all remember that a remake of Silent Hill 2 won’t erase the original from existence anymore than the remake of 2012 Total Recall replaced Arnold Schwarzenegger’s original. I don’t know why that’s the reference my brain pulled, but here we are. I own Silent Hill 2 on PlayStation 2 and PC - including all the original discs. That PC version has absolutely zero right to be working on modern computers, but the fan community has built up a foundation of mods that make it both playable and better. Essentially, modders did what Konami decidedly did not do when they released the inexplicably flawed HD remasters of Silent Hill and Silent Hill 2. It’s not instantly accessible, but with some searching skills and digital elbow grease you can play enhanced versions of Silent Hill 2 today.
So, the good news is that if you have old copies of the game or you find some way to procure them from some means we won’t name, you can still play Silent Hill 2. Yes, it should be ported and ready to go on every major platform. And, in even further good news, this doesn’t feel like a complete replacement of the original the same way that Final Fantasy 7 Remake wasn’t a replacement of that game’s predecessor. In fact, there are some hints that it’s literally like Final Fantasy 7 Remake in that 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:it might be a secret sequel.
If that’s true, it sounds like Bloober is trying some ideas beyond expanding the playtime and making combat less awkward (although I believe the awkwardness of the combat adds to the atmosphere of the game). Changes could make for an interesting, new experience. Silent Hill: Shattered Memories is somewhat a 💜remake of the first game, but it remixes and adds and changes so much that it’s really its own incredible experience. Bloober’s remake isn’t going as far, but there’s no♌ reason to believe it won’t have added some extra - wait for it - layers of fear.
Despite all my misgivings, I think the Silent Hill 2 remake deserves a chance because it seems like Bloober took a lot of comments to heart and there hasn’t been the forest of red flags that surrounded Silent Hill Ascension. Don’t get me wrong; the devs didn’t change the costumes I clutched my pearls at, but it’s starting to look like they’ve done something different than just add a new coat of paint and a few extra boss fights. Plus, there was a rumor that there was goin♚g to be a Pyramid Headꦺ origin story and Bloober has since said that information was incorrect. Which🀅 I’m hoping is true. Yes, I’m giving this game a chance. Yes, I’m still nitpicking everything. Yes, I’ll probably be pa🐟ying for it on multiple platforms even if it runs at 15 frames per second.
As someone who’s had my own work taken in bad faith or by people who’ve decided not to like me because of a project I worked on years ago, I’m sure Bloober is in a very stressful position. Rather, I know they’re in a very stressful position. I want it to be a good game, but more importantly I’m also sure it wants it to be a good game. Remaking Silent Hill 2 takes guts because the fanbase ain’t easily pleased. It’s remaking a video game so beloved that it often eclipses the rest of the series. People have not been entirely polite to Bloober. Hell, I have not been entirely polite to Bloober, which is stupid, but - and this is true - I am stupid. All I’m saying is it’s starting to look like🐷 Bloober might pull off 🤡the heist.
Am I being too optimistic? I don’t know! Maybe? I have spent years shaking my fist at the clouds shouting, “I want another Silent Hill game!” And then when one comes, I shake my fist at the clouds again and say, “Not that one! A good one!” I’m tired of it. Purity tests have left me with the same handful of games in the series. The Short Message isn’t nearly my favorite Silent Hill game but it did shake that little bean in my head to remind me that this series has more to offer. I🧸 can either be angry about Silent Hill 2 being changed in the remake or I can give it a shot, hope for the best, and know the original will always exist. But either way, I’ll be buying my copy on day one and then complaining online immedia💮tely after.
