Being the Dragonborn isn't all about killing monsters and saving the world. The nation of Skyrim has any number of activities to occupy a would-be hero and keep them from addressing their destiny. For instance, it's possible for the Dragonborn to acquire, or even build, a house. Skyrim is split into nine different holds, and they all have their own distinct feel. Some for the better, some for the worse.

A hero looking for a home base may find themselves a little spoiled for choice, having to make a few firm choices and prioritise where they wouldꦑ want to live. Alternatively, they could just 💖buy everything and face the struggle of forgetting which of their nine houses they stashed that one dragon claw in. Everything has a downside.

9 🔜 ဣ Hjaalmarch

The remains of Hroggar's burned house in Morthal

It's dark, swampy, and infested with vampires. What's not to love? Hjaalmarch is one of the smallest holds, and sits close to Haafingar and Solitude, though why you wouldn't move to Haafingar instead is a big question. There's not a lot to do in the one-horse town of Morthal. It boasts an inn, an alchemy shop, a burned-down building, 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:and some mysterious deaths.

If you have the Hearthfire add-on you can get hold of a plot of land here, which boasts a fish hatchery. However, it's isolated, many adopted children will hate it, and your housecarl is likely to get murdered by horkers.

8 ༒ Winterhold

Skyrim-Winterhold-Air-Shot

If you have ambitions at the mage college then Winterhold might be a place to settle — they're certainly happy to give you a place to sleep if you can pass initiation. Aside from magical studies, there's not a lot else to recommend this isolated corner of Skyrim. It's cold, barren, and the ostensible capital is little more than an inn and a sparsely-stocked goods store.

The surrounding area is full of snow, horkers, ice wolves, and mage students who've met horrible and ironic ends practicing magic. Unless you're wanting to 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:become an archmage, it's best to look elsewhere.

7 The Pale

A view of Dawnstar in Skyrim

The capital, Dawnstar is a bit on an improvement on the backwater that is Winterhold, with a few more shops. Dawnstar does have its own problems, however. It has an outrageous dragon problem. Dragons will frequently spawn over the town and will take to incinerating the NPCs if unchallenged, and the town guards aren't always up to the job. Expect to have to save the town at least once, or make peace with some of the residents becoming dragon food.

With Hearthfire you can purchase a plot of land for a house here, though it does feel like cheating that one of its best qualities is that it's close to other, more interesting holds.

6 Falkreath

The Falkreath Graveyard from Skyrim

Do you like places that are a bit spooky, but Hjaalmarch is too cursed to consider? Falkreath Hold might be worth a look. With its misty woodlands and namesake town sat alongside a massive graveyard, Falkreath is a little on the morbid side if more friendly than others on the list. It's not the busiest hold, with its secondary settlement being Helgen — somewhere that, for obvious reasons, isn't going to do a lot for you. Even so, Falkreath itself boasts a few shops and an inn, which is better than Winterhold, Dawnstar or Morthal.

With Hearthfire you can purchase the Lakeview Manor plot here, which has lovely views of Lake Ilinata and puts you between the hold capital and Riverwood. The hold is also the home of 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:the Dark Brotherhood, so murderers will f𒉰ind a home. 🅷Initially, at least.

5 The Reach

A view of The Reach in Skyrim

The Reach is perhaps not for the faint-hearted. Rocky and rugged, you've got to contend with the constant threat of the Forsworn, who want independence for the reach and express it by trying to stab you on sight. A trader is even getting attacked by one when you arrive in the capital.

Markarth gets points for aesthetics. Built into and around a 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Dwemer ruin, it's full of metal and old machinery. There is a house up high on the walkways, though a certain abandoned house next to the marketplace is a decent enough area to camp out — as long as you don't mind dealing with what's inside first.

4 Eastmarch

The beginning of the Battle For Windhelm in Skyrim

Eastmarch is the Stormcloak stronghold of Skyrim, and as such is probably a great place to be if you are both a supporter of 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Jarl Ulfric and a Nord. If you're an Empire sympathiser, or just about any other race or species, you may find it unfriendly. Most of the non-human residents have been pushed into their own districts.

Windhelm is a distinctly grisly place. It has a real serial killer problem, and there's a kid trying to summon up the Dark Brotherhood. Even the house you're able to acquire, with some effort, was the scene of a horrible murder. If you don't mind living in a murder house, the city has numerous shops, two inns and a thriving market. The museum might end up closed for 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:reasons that will become clear later.

3 Haafingar

solitude from above

Being the region of Solitude, one of the major cites of Skyrim, and the seat of the Imperial side of the civil war, Empire loyalists in particular might be interested in putting down roots in Haafingar. You have the quaint village of Dragon Bridge on the main road, and the capital, Solitude, towering over the region. Unfortunately, you also have the 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Thalmor Embassy, and the highest concentration ꧂♏of these objectionable elven authoritarians in Skyrim.

Solitude boasts plenty of shops, and the Bard's College, though its player house pricing is very steep. Even if you're rich enough to live in Solitude, the elves who run the Radiant Raiment will still talk to you like you're a street urchin.

2 The Rift

Skyrim: Riften As Seen From The Exterior

One of the things likely to strike you on entering The Rift is how pretty the place is. Full of deciduous forests, wildlife and rivers, it feels a lot different to the snowy, alpine regions. The next thing likely to occur to you is how crooked Riften is. Even arriving in the city, you're barred from one city gate and extorted for money at another. The Rift is 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Thieves' Guild territory. It's also bought and paid for by the despotic Maven Blackbriar.

If you don't mind all the organised crime, Riften can be a pleasant place to set up. Honeyside can be purchased as a house and sits close to a number of shops, as well as letting the owner exit from the house outside the city wall directly. Helpful if you've just been doing a bit of crime yourself.

1 Whiterun

view of Loreius farm looking towards whiterun

A predictable choice perhaps, but not without good reason. Whiterun is the largest hold in Skyrim and occupies a useful central position for branching out to other regions. The capital city of the same name has a good number of facilities. There is an inn, two blacksmiths, an apothecary and a general store. The Companions are also based out of the city, if that's your thing.

The house in the city, Breezehome, is cheap and easy to acquire, putting you near to both the shops and the way out into the countryside. You can also enjoy good standing early on, regardless of your standing in the civil war. The most obvious downside is that you have to look at Nazeem's face every time you step outside, but with plenty of weapons for sale, you're sure to find a solution to that problem.
