Fans know the Greybeards as an interesting group of monks that get more hate than they deserve for not using their powers to stop the Thalmor or Alduin from wreaking havoc on their home. They're one of the 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Last Dragonborn's guides through the awakening of their powers and one of the more influential groups in Skyrim.
After talking to some NPCs and reading books on the group, it's easy to see that there is more to these old men than meets the♌ eye. If players aren't going out of their way to fin🎉d more information on the Greybeards, they may come out of the experience with more questions than answers. However, these facts can be found in the game so long as you know where to look.
10 🎀 They W🗹ere Formed In The First Era
One of the 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:trials put on the Dragonborn when first interacting with the Greybeards is to retrieve the Horn of Jurgen Windcaller. After retrieving it, they then seem to immediately return it so that the next Dragonborn 🐷can repeat the quest in the future.
Jurgen Windcaller, as it turns out, was the original Greybeard, and, following an embarrassing defeat at the hands of his enemies, he spent an extended period of time meditating on the meaning of why 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:he could use the Thu'um. He c❀reated the morals that guide thꦏe likes of Arngeir in the future.
9 Their Members Are Called Tongues ꦡ
Although it is almost never said in-game, the individual members of the Greybeards, aside from being referred to by their own name, are called Tongues. This lines up with the Greybeard's other naming conventions as the peak of the mountain where High Hrothgar is located is refer♉red to as The Throat of the World.
Furthermore, their mantra is known as the Way of the Voice, so it's not too much of a stretch that they 🧸would name themselves after ♌something else to do with speaking.
8 🔥 Jurgen 🔯Windcaller Was Once A Nord Warrior
As previo📖usly mentioned, Jurgen Windcaller created the Way of the Voice and the first iterations of the Greybeards. This came after suffering a defeat at ✃the hands of his enemies, as he was sure that his proficiency with the Thu'um should have made him unstoppable.
This particular battle was waged against the long-forgotten Dwemer and the progenitors of the Dark Elves, the Chimer/Velothi/Dunmer, for control over 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Morrowind in the Merethic Era. However, Jurgen's defeat was s🌱o bad that any forces who were still alive were forced back to Skyrim following their loss.
7 Their Pacifist Nature💮 Comes From Jurgen's Past 💖
After reaching enlightenment and deciding to cast aside his waring ways, Jurgen Windcaller became known as Jurgen the Calm. He used his immense power as 🌊a means to worship the gods who gifted him this strength rather than use it against his enemies for his own gain.
This sentiment carried on down to the modern iteration of the Gre😼ybeards that the player interacts with. It's also the main reason why they refuse to insert themselves into political and martial issues as they know full well just how much sway they would have in battle.
6 Arngeir 🌱Is Far More Powerful Than He Appears
When the player is exploring High Hrothgar, they may notice that, of all the membꦍers who live on the mountain, only Arng♑eir will ever speak to them in full sentences. This is because, unlike the other Greybeards, Arngeir has such fine control over his voice that he is able to speak to regular people without accidentally killing them.
The other Greybeards, on the other hand,♐ make the earth tremble every time they do speak. So they will only use wor🅰ds of power in a hushed tone when granting their knowledge to the player.
5 Ulfric Stormcloak Was In Training To Become A Greybeard 🔯 ✤
Before he𒁏 went on to become the contested High King of Skyrim, Ul✃fric was in training, from quite a young age, to become a Greybeard. That's the reason why he is able to use the Thu'um to some degree in battle. However, it's also why he is not so powerful that he will accidentally kill anyone he talks to.
After the Great War b💯roke out in Skyrim, he felt duty-bound to leave High Hrothgar and become an Imperial Legionnaire. That's where he was subsequently captured by the Thalmor✱ and interrogated for information.
4 They Can Sense The Presence Of A Dragonborn 🗹
One of the many strange abilities that the Greybeards seem to have is their ability to sense when a Dragonborn has come into their power. This is shown in Skyrim when, almost immediately after absorbing their first dragon soul, they shꦬout "Dovahki🐻in" down the mountain to call them.
This isn't the first time this has happened in Tamriel's history as they did the same when 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Tiber Septim came into his power. The Greybeards callied him Dragonborn and proclaimed that he would unite Tamriel under his banner. But this would also spark the long-lasౠting wars that would eventually come to form the Septim Dynasty.
3 ꧑ ❀ Their Shouts Are Different From The Player's
Even thoug🍌h both dragons and the Greybeards can use the same shouts as the player character, the effects and cooldown for these shouts are much different to wh🌱at the player is able to use.
As should be expected for men who have spent their lives honing their skills, the Greybeards are able to use the Thu'um much more efficiently than ♚the player. They can also use multiple shouts in quick succession, as well as cast several shouts silently (similar to a dragon's Fire Breath shout).
2 They Have Been Mentioned In P♋revious Games
The Greybeards may be featured heavily in Skyrim's story, but that doesn't mean they haven't appeared in an Elder Scrolls game before this point. While they have appeared in name only, the Greybeards have been mentioned in both 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard.
However, t𒁃hese mentions aren't easy to come across and most players will likely miss them. Perhaps there is some hidden explanation yet to be revealed for why Bethesda chose to utilize them more.
1 ꦍ Jurgen Windcaller Influenced Paart𒉰hurnax's Ideologies
It may seem as though Paarthurnax, as both an ancient dragon and as Alduin's former right-hand, was the one to come up with the Way of the𓆏 Voice and teach it to humanity. But this actually wasn't the case; it was Jurgen who taugh♑t Paarthurnax.
Thanks to his immense age, Paarthurnax was able to keep Jurgen's theology passed down through the ages in its purest form. Potentially, Paarthurna💟x also taught it to other dragons following the events of Skyrim, so long as the player didn't take the option to kill Paarthu𝄹rnax for the Blades.
