Although Skyrim contains a variety of enemies for you to fight, it doesn't have as many traditional bosses as other RPGs. However, a few enemies are essentially bosses due to how powerful they are and the rewards they grant you for defeating them.
Karstaag is an enemy that made its first appearance in Morrowind; however, it made a return in Skyrim's Dragonborn DLC as the most powerful enemy in the game. Here's how to summon Karstaag on Solstheim and how to win the battle against this giant ghost.
How To Summon Karstaag
Karstaag is a Dragonborn DLC exclusive enemy, so you need to install this expansion pack before you can fight it. Once you have the Dragonborn DLC ready to go, you need to travel to the island of Solstheim. If you've made a trip to Solstheim in the past, then you can fast-travel to the island. However, if you've never set foot on Solstheim, then you need to travel to the Windhelm Docks and 𓆉speak with Gjolund Sal🔜t-Sage, a ship captain that regularly travels to Solstheim.
You have to pay Gjolund 500 Gold if you can't persuade him with the Speech skill; however, it's worth the investment since you'll need to travel to Solstheim for the Dragonborn DLC main storyline later in your playthrough. Pay the character, and he will take you to Raven Rock, a settlement on the southern side of Solstheim.
Step 1
Once you're on Solstheim, you can explore the island however you want, but you need to find a cave on the northwestern side of the region. Stock up on any supplies you may need while you're in Raven Rock. You'll encounter many enemies before you have the chance to fight Karstaag; keep this in mind while buying equipment.
Step 2
The dungeon that you have to travel to from Raven Rock is called the Glacial Cave. This cave is crawling with Riekling Warriors, and they can easily overwhelm you if you run into many of them. Bring a follower with you for this reason. You can find Glacial Cave on the northwestern edge of Solstheim; there's a picture above of the exact location on the Solstheim map. You may also have to fight enemies on your travel to the cave, but you can usually avoid them by running away.
Step 3
Once you're inside Glacial Cave, you need to travel through it and defeat Rieklings until you eventually come across the back of the cave, where the Skull Of Karstaag sits waiting for a traveler to find it. Defeat any of the remaining enemies and pick up the Skull Of Karstaag. Now you need to make you're way back out of Glacial Cave to Solstheim so you can visit the next location.
Step 4
The next place you need to visit is Castle Karstaag, which is a unique castle where you can summon and fight Karstaag. To find Castle Karstaag, you need to travel to a higher point in Solstheim, so it's difficult to get from Glacial Cave directly to Castle Karstaag. If you have a fast-travel point that is close to Karstaag Castle, then travel there before continuing on your adventure.
Once you reach the entrance to Castle Karstaag, you will need to pick a Master level lock, which may be difficult depending on your Lockpicking skill. If you can pick the lock, then head inside and skip to the next step. However, if you're unable to pick this lock, then there is another solution.
You can also travel through the Karstaag Castle Ruins, which🌞 is a cave system that you can find near Karstaag Castle, below the castle itself. Find the entrance nearby from the door and head inside it. You will have to fight many more Rieklings if you use this method, so bring a lot of supplies. You can maneuver your way throughout the caverns until you eventually reach the second entrance to the Karstaag Castle.
Step 5
Once inside the Karstaag Castle, you'll realize that it's a very small location without almost any decoration or furniture. This is the area where you'll have to fight Karstaag, so the open area is perfect for the battle. Summoning Karstaag is easy once you have Karstaag's Skull.
You'll spot a throne at the end of the room, walk over to it, and you'll receive a direction telling you to place the skull on the throne's seat. Once you place the skull down, Karstaag will appear, and you'll have to fight the boss. You can find the best strategies for defeating Karstaag below.
How To Defeat Karstaag
Karstaag is one of the strongest enemies in Skyrim, so you have to throw a lot at the giant before you can win the battle. You'll notice that Karstaag is actually a Frost Giant's ghost, and its status as undead makes the fight even harder. Read the strategies below to find out how to defeat Karstaag.
Karstaag has many powerful resistances and regenerates health very quickly. Additionally, you should only attempt to fight Karstaag at a high level. This will vary depending on the difficulty you play on; however, don't attempt the fight before at least Level 30, and level 60 or higher is preferable.
Combat Strategy
Karstaag uses a stomp attack that can throw you across the battlefield, which is an effect you may recognize from the Unrelenting Force shout.
