What Is It?
Simply put, Bug Island is a floating rock in the Sky where you can catch a ton of bugs — every species, in fact. It's not that interesting for the first bit of the game, but it opens up as this insect-filled paradise once you clear Levias of the Bilocyte parasite, which can be done after you finish the Fire Sanctuary. Until then, it's basically just a barren rock.
Strich, a long-time lover of everything creepy-crawly, moves here once you help Levias and sets up a mini-game for all the arthropod-capturing fun you could ever have. You can fly here on your Loftwing to participate in this mini-game, both to win more insects, but also to complete the Beedle's Missing Beetle sidequest.
How To Get To Bug Island
Bug Island is located on the far west side of the Sky map. It's inside the Thunderhead, so🦂 make your way into the storm and keep flying west. You can spot Bug Island from the air easily by looking for the tall lattice fencing that surrounds many of its levels.
Before you can find Strich on Bug Island, you need to defeat the parasite Bilocyte on Levias. After this, you'll need to exit and reenter the Thunderhead to activate Strich being on Bug Island.
When flying through the🔯 area, make sure to watch out for Skytails (those centipede-like flying enemies). As much as we l🐼ove bugs in this neck of the woods, these ones will harm you, not help you.
Strich's Mini-Game
When you land on Bug Island, you should see Strich. Speak to him, and he'll tell you about the island and the bugs that live there. He'll also explain his mini-game. There are two difficulty levels, each with different prizes and requirements.
Bug Beginner (easy):
- It costs 20 rupees to enter.
- You'll need to find five bugs: a Lanayru Ant, a Sky Stag Beetle, a Skyloft Mantis, a Starry Firefly, and a Volcanic Ladybug.
- Prizes:
- Under five minutes: 30 rupees
- Under three minutes: 50 rupees
- Under two minutes: any of the following: Blessed Butterfly (x5), Deku Hornet (x5), Sky Stag Beetle (x5), or Skyloft Mantis (x5).
Bug Wrangler (hard):
- It costs 50 rupees to enter.
- You need to find ten bugs: one Blessed Butterfly, two Eldin Rollers, two Faron Grasshoppers, one Gerudo Dragonfly, one Lanayru Ant, one Sand Cicada, one Skyloft Mantis, and one Woodland Rhino Beetle.
- Here are the prizes:
- Under five minutes: 80 rupees.
- Under three minutes: any of the following: Gerudo Dragonfly (x5), Lanayru Ant (x5), Volcanic Ladybug (x5), or Woodland Rhino Beetle (x5).
- Under two minutes: any of the following: Eldin Roller (x5), Faron Grasshopper (x5), Sand Cicada (x5), Starry Firefly (x5), or Volcanic Ladybug (x5).
Beedle's Beetle
Despite all the bug-catching fun you can have on this island, it also serves an important purpose for a sidequest. That sidequest is Beedle's Missing Beetle, and it tasks you with helping everyone's favorite bug-loving shopkeeper locate his missing beetle — a Horned Colossus.
To activate this quest, you'll have to have visited Bug Island and spoken to Strich. The next time you visit Beedle, he'll have a thought bubble over his head. Speak with him and he'll say to come back after dark. Sleep in the bed inside his shop, and the game will progress to nighttime. Head outside and you'll find Beedle by a campfire. He'll tell you about the missing Horned Colossus and its cage.
So, head back inside and sleep again to make it morning. Make your way back to Bug Island and Strich will tell you about a super rare insect that he found (Wow! What could it be?) It is, of course, Beedle's beetle. Strich tells you it's all yours if you complete the mini-game. You'll need to do the hard mode challenge and find ten bugs in three minutes. If you do it successfully, Strich will give you the Horned Colossus in its cage.
Return to Beedle, try not to sigh when he tells you to come back at night, then sleep in his bed to advance the clock forward again. Talk to Beedle outside, and he'll be very grateful that you returned his prized bug — so grateful, in fact, that he'll give you five Gratitude Crystals and a 50% discount on the next item you buy from him!
