Gaming icon Sonic the Hedgehog f🐭irst sped onto the scene with his titular 1991 debut for the Sega Genesis. He was soon solidified as the company’s mascot and in turn, became Nintendo and Mario’s rival. Unfortunately, his status as a number one bestseller has diminished over time.
While his games have been inconsistent throughout the years in terms of reviews, his fan base still remains one of the most dedicated out there. Thanks to them, they help preserve data that may have otherwise been lost. With the help of fan sites and other journalistic endeavors, let’s take a look at ten Sonic games Sega decided to cancel. As a final note, most of these stories can be found on unlessꦡ otherwise linked.
10 Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Episode III
Sonic The Hedgehog 4 was an idea from Sega to bring Sonic back to his 2D or🐲igins for the then-new conso♎les. This started with the first episode in 2010 for Wii, PS3, Xbox 360, and iOS devices.
It then got a second episode in 2012. The first was received well, but because the second didn’t, plans for the third episode were canceled. I🤪t w🎶as also never officially announced and or showed off so there’s not much to share here.
9 Sonic Remakes
Before plans were finalized for Sonic CD, Sega was going to remake the first two games on the Sega CD. It worked for Mario and Nintendo via Super Mario All-Stars on SNES, so why not?
They would clean up the graphics along with adding in additional content like cutscenes, presumably animated like they are in the finalized version of Sonic CD. Eventually, plans were canceled and consolidated into the g🐷ame Sega fans know today.
8 Sister Sonic
Popful Mail originally debuted for the PC-8801 in Japan before it made its way to consoles via the Sega Saturn. Eventually, this version was also brought to the West, but prior to the full localization, Sega wanted to bring it over as a Sonic game starring a female counterpart, aka Sister Sonic.
This can be seen in a rumor column as early as the June 1993 issue of . This practice was not uncommon at the time for Western localizations. The most famous example is Super Mario Bros. 2 being a 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:converted version of a Japanese game called Doki Doki Panic.
7 Sonic X-treme
Sonic X-treme was going to be the first real Sonic game in 3D. This version of the game is actually the second iteration, which started off as Sonic Mars.
That was going to be made for the 32X add-on for the Sega Genesis. This was ultimately reformed into Sonic X-treme, but both projects were canceled in the end. Unlike the first few examples, there is actually a bit available online about the games alth𝓀ough mostly in the form of pictures.
6 Sonic DS
This was another example of a game never officially being announced. Sonic DS is more like a codename given to a tech demo Sega made for the DS. It was shown off at E3 2004, which showcased Sonic runningဣ in 3D on the portable.
Nothing ever came of this demo after E3 2004, but the footage can still be seen online. Some mechanics were later used in 2005’s Sonic Rush, which was a 2D game instead.
5 Sonic Crackers
Here is an example of a canceled game fans can actually play. The ROM is out𒁃 there online if gamers know wheꦇre to look.
It has players go through a couple of stages as both Sonic and Tails. The catch is the two of them are tied together by a ring, which would eventually be the basis for the spinoff game, Knuckles' Chaotix.
4 Sonic Extreme
Not to be confused with Sonic X-treme, Sonic Extreme was being maꦕde for the original Xbox via Vision Scape Interactive. This actually wasn’t discovered until 2011, which should spell out the fact that it was never officially announced.
It was going to🌱 be a skateboarding game with some classic Sonic style action. There are quite a few videos online of this prototype being played. While this was canceled, Sonic would later go on to skateboard multiple times in various games.
3 Sonic’s Edusoft
Not to be outdone by Mario again, Sonic too almost got an educational game. That was the aim of Sonic’s Edusoft for the Sega Master System.
Players would travel around a world map, much like Super Mario World, and tackle various problems like math equations. For whatever reason, it was canceled but the near finished ROM is online.
2 Sonic Ride
Sonic Ride was designed to be an arcade game where♈ players would travel, presumably in a car, through the land of the Blue Blur. While no footage of this exists technically, the game can still be seen in the music video for the song “.”
So at the very l🌼east renders for the game were not completely erased. Except for the video, all that exists officially is a title card.
1 Sonic-16
In the early stages, the Sonic games and cartoons existed as their own universes. However, a game based directly after the cartoons was going to be made, which was called Sonic-16.
The site does have a couple of screensho♏ts along with a video. It seems like it would play like the classic games, but had a slightly different art style to accompany the cartoon.
