The trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog landed last week and honestly, it left us with more questions than answers. We hoped our fears that Sonic could potentially look terrifying and that the film seems awful would be washed away, leaving us with nothing but꧒ good feelings about a movie release based on one of our favorite childhood heroes.
Sadly, it did quite 🦹the opposite. Sonic's design is as bad as we had all feared it would be. Those muscular le🦂gs, his human teeth, and fur?! The backlash has been so fervent that there are apparently plans to tweak the hedgehog's design. What that, unfortunately, will not change is what appears to be a fundamentally bad movie.
After having had a week to digest the whole thing, not everyone will have been left banging their head against a wall. In fact, we know for certain that at least one person is a huge fan of the trailer. Coolio, the "Gangsta's Paradise" singer, has seen streams of his song go through the roof since it was used in the Sonic the Hedgehog trailer, .
Gangsta's Paradise was streamed 11 million times during the week the trailer dropped. That's a massive 237% more than the previous week. It still doesn't explain why the song was used for the movie, but good for Coolio. In an even stranger twist, Weird Al Yankovic's parody of the track, Amish Paradise, also received a significant bump. It was streamed 295,000 times, which was an uptick 🐼of 31%.
We are incredibly happy that someone is doing well off the back of this trailer because, for everyone else, it appears to have been bad news. Fans have been left disappointed and in turn, that disappointment may have created a lot more work for the movie studio and its animators. Fingers c🐠rossed that the trailer has made the movie seem worse than it actually is, or that sufficient changes will be made to ensure it doesn't bomb upon release.
