I'm a Sonic fan. I've been a Sonic fan for longer than I can remember. If you're reading this then I'm assuming you're a Sonic fan too, in which case, you know what we're like. I saw the first trailer for 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Sonic Superstars and was filled with excitement. Between the movies and the games, we're living through a blue blur purple patch right now, and Superstars looks primed to keep that run going.
That was before the release date rumors started to circulate. Not only was it suggested that Sonic Superstars will launch 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:in a jam-packed October, but the exact date doing the rounds was October 17. Three days before 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Super Mario Bros. Wonder and 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Marvel's Spider-Man 2, neither of which is going to budge. Relief washed over me as days passed and that release date was never confirmed. Either someone made it up, or Sega thought better of♐ launching Superstars that wꦰeek and backed off.
Then Gamescom happened. With less than two months to go until the rumored release, 168澳洲幸运෴5开奖网:Sega dropped a new, somewhat uninspiring tr꧙ailer, confirming the dormant rumors were true. Watch out Spidey, Mario, 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Alan Wake, and every other video g🍎ame protagonist starring in a game this October, Sonic wants in on the fun and Superstars will indeed be speeding onto pretty much all platforms on October 17.
I'm ever the optimist when it comes to anything Sonic, but even I'm worried at the prospect of a game I'm hoping does well launching in the middle of an incredibly busy month. On top of all of the games I've already mentioned, Sonic and the gang will also need to compete for sales against the likes of 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Assassin's Creed Mirage, 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Metal Gear Solid's Master Collection, and 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Detective Pikachu Returns. Granted, there might not be much crossover between fans of some of those games, but with so 💃many of them launching in such a short space of time, the Venn diagram representing their fandoms is starting to get very messy.
There's one game Sonic Superstars will have to compete with for sales and attention that worries me more than any other: Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Both reimagined 2D sidescrollers starring the characters that basically started it all. Their new games releasing in the same week, vying for your attention. Sounds exciting doesn't it? The trouble is, I know how this story ends.
I’ve seen this film before. I spent the first eight years of my life firmly believing Sonic and Mario were on an even keel and to an extent, they were. Then 3D Mario games were invented and they stomped Sonic into the ground. So much so that the hedgehog effectively became a secondary Nintendo mascot a few years after that, joining 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Super Smash Bros. and bringing his frie🍨nds to the Olympics to compete against everyone from the Mushroom Kingdom.
That's why I find it so surprising that Sega thinks it's wise to release a 2D Sonic game three days before a brand new 2D Mario game. Not just any 2D Mario game either. Wonder is the first truly new 2D Mario game in more than a decade and the first time the concept has been truly reimagined for even longer. It's going to be a big deal, and even though Superstars has a three-day head start, it won’t be enough.
Sega's decision to push through with the October 17 date feels like one of two things. Either the studio has so much confidence in Superstars that it’s thinking, ‘You know what, this is good enough to compete with anything Mario has to offer’. If that's what's going on here then hell yeah, let's do it! The last 20 years of being a Sonic fan have been built on blind optimism, so let's take it to the next level.
The other possibility is that Sega doesn't have any faith in Superstars at all and it's releasing the co-op game during what will be a whirlwind week in video games in the hope everyone will be looking forward to, playing, and then talking about Wonder and Spider-Man, drowning out most of the chatter about how bad Superstars is.
If it isn't either of those things, then I don't see why Superstars' release can't be delayed by a month. November is somewhat busy too, but it's positively barren compared to October. It also tends to be Sega's month of choice when it comes to releasing new Sonic games. 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Frontiers, Forces, Generations, Colors, and Unleashed all had November launch dates.
I will be playing day one, of course, and on days four, five, and six which are arguably more important. I'm not the one Sega needs to worry about, though. There will be a lot of people out there looking at the Mario and Sonic release dates and whether it's time, money, or both, they will have a decision to make. History, sales numbers, and just hype in general dictate Wonder will be the one most of those people pick, and that really sucks for Superstars, especially if it's as good a Sonic game as I'm anticipating it will be.
