Unsurprisingly, it's currently unclear if Jim Carrey is returning for Sonic the Hedgehog 4.
The writers "hope" that the character of Robotnik will come back in the sequel, but can't confirm anything just yet.
Sonic 3 aimed to give the character a "complete story", just in case they couldn't bring him back.

"We knew there was a very real possibility that this m๊ight be his last one, and it might be for real, but we wanted to make it a satisfying capper for him," says writer Pat Casey. "So, if this is the last we saw of Ivo, he had a good, complete story with a real ending thℱat feels satisfying and felt earned."

ꦿFellow writer Josh Miller then chimes in, adding, "But we all hope it's not".

Casey then explains that Eggman is "definitely, definitely, definitely dead", for real this time. That is unless he "survives somehow". So, in other♊ words, the team is very much keeping its options open, and is perhaps waiting to find out if Carrey will return for yet anot🔜her instalment in the Sonic series.

If he really 𒆙is gone, it will be interesting to see who fills the void. The mid-credit scene that teased Amy for the sequel also included Metal Sonic - or rather, several 𝐆Metal Sonics - so that could be an option. Alternatively, the post-credit scene revealed that Shadow survived the events of Sonic 3, so he could return in an antagonistic role, perhaps brought about by amnesia if we follow the storyline from the games.

In any case, it will be a while before we find out. Sonic the He♚dgehog 4 is set be with us sometime in💖 2027, as confirmed before Sonic 3 even hit theatres.
