Since then, we've had lots of evidence that was going to be the case, from Crush 40's Live and Learn being confirmed to be in the movie at some point, to its lo๊go literally being a recreation of the one seen in Sonic Adventure 2. During the interview, Ascher says that Sonic 3 is one of the most exciting things that the team has done with the franchise yet and points out that it "obviously" takes a lot from SA2.
Of course, anyone who has played a Sonic game before will have realised that Sonic 3 is going to take a lot from Sonic Adventure 2 just from Shadow even being in the movie, but it does raise some interesting questions about what else is going to be in the movie that's inspired by the game.
