In an effort to expand its list of in-house studios, Sony announced this morning that it has acquired the UK-based Firesprite as its latest PlayStation Studios developer. Established in 2012 by former members of SIE Studio Liverpool (), the team is most well known for the Wipeout serieꦛs and was previously shuttered💎 by Sony for an undisclosed reason in 2012.

PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst this morning and wrote, "After a number of years closely collaborating on several games together, including The Playroom (PS4) and The Playroom VR (PS VR), I couldn't be more delighted to welcome Firesprite to the PlayStation Studios family as our 14th studio."

Firesprite's Graeme Ankers, managing director for the studio, also gave a statement on the PlayStation Blog. He writes, "Today is an incredibly exciting day for Firesprite as we join PlayStation Studios with the backing of Hermen and the entire PlayStation Family. We are very much looking forward to the next part of our journey!... I firstly want to thank PlayStation and their community for the warm welcome into a family of incredible creators. I'd also like to thank all of our ‘Sprites, past and present, who have helped shape the Firesprite we see today."

Having worked on a number of PS4 titles, one of which was a brand new IP titled The Persistence, it seems like Firesprite will be put to good use by Sony. With such an acclaimed legacy IP in the form of Wipeout under its belt, it would be excellent to see what a PS5 versꦛion of the series could🍃 be.
