Derek Yu, creator of the hit indie game Spelunky announced recently on Twitter that the much anticipated Seplunky 2 will be delayed until sometime next year. This will come as a disappointment to fans who have been anticipating the game for quite some time. Spelunky 2 was announced late in 2017 and fans finally got a trailer in August of 2018. Even though the delay puts a damper on some of the excitement, it seems like Derek and his team are taking their time with the game and that's something to be app꧙reciated.
Derek Yu explains that the development is going well, but based on the scope and detail of the game, it is taking longer than expected. In an industry that seems to rush out games that aren't necessarily polished only to add updates in the future, this comes as a surprise, but a welcome one. It means that they are taking their time to give us the be💙st possible version of the game they can. If that causes us a couple more months of waiting to get a thoroughly pဣolished game, then it will be worth the wait.
The original Spelunky came out in 2008 for Microsoft Windows and became a small hit. It was later remade for the Xbox 360 and ported to both the PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation Vita. Spelunky earned solid reviews and gave fans hours of enjoyable play-time. When Spelunky 2 was announced fans were excited at the prospect of a larger, more diverse gaming experience going forward. The original Spelunky was also a solid success as an indie🦋 game, selling over 500,000 copies worldwide since its initial launch.
It looks like fans of the Spelunky series will have to wait a little bit longer for Spelunky 2 to be released. All signs point to either an early 2020 - mid 2020 release. Yu mentioned that the development was going well, but they just need more time. The fact that they are taking their time with the game is a good sign and points to a better, more polished and enjoyable game when it does come out. If Spelunky 2 can build upon the original game and expand in the right ways, it can become a sleeper hit next year ♌and give the fans who waited so long a game worth playing for years to come.
