Whether you played the incredibly popular original games or you have only just become immersed in the world with the newly remade versions, most gamers have played Spyro the Dragon at some point.
The incredibly charming purple dragon quickly became a hit amongst gamers with the game being both incredibly fun and challenging, havi☂ng the ability to entertain the masses with its family-friendly nature.
While the game is now considered to be a classic amongst most people, however, there are many facts and bits of trivia that many people aren't aware of when it comes to Spyro the Dragon, and within this article🐷, we will list two of them.
10 His Name
When people think about Spyro the Dragon, most people immediately think of the purple animated creature, however, the original name was far more ord🅘inary than Spyro, with the original plan being to call him Pete.
While Pete is cer🌼tainly a cute enough name for a dragon, it doesn't quite suit his sharp-tongued and cheeky character, as well as Spyro does, with Pete feeling a little too human in comparison.
Thankfully, a decision was made to change ♋his name and he was given the one that we all know and love now, and it's fair to say that it was a wise decision overall.
9 A Dif♏ferent Color
Speaking of changes that got made at the last minute, it wasn't💜 just Spyro's name that was altered towards the end of the process, as originally Spyro (or Pete), was actuallyꦕ supposed to be a green dragon.
Green would have been a slightly more traditional color as far as dragons are concerned in mythology, but the problem came in the fact that there is so much grass in the game, with Spyro blending in too much for 😼the game to actually work.
On top of that, if they had actually called him Pete and kept him green,🤪 there would no doubt have been links towards to classic Disney movie, and therefore the changes were a wise move.
8 His Age
I𒀰f you thought a name and color were the only things that were changed from the original plans of the game, as the first plans actually had Spyro as an adult dragon🌺 that would have been more mature.
It is almost i🌠mpossible to think of the game without Spyro being youthful and cheeky, as that is one of the reasons that the character became so popular as his charm was a major hit amongst players.
Thankfully, this was another area where the team realized that a change was needed and his age was brought ri𝓀ght down to the youthful dragon we know today.
7 Crash Cheat Code 💃
When 💝you think about demo's of games being releases you do not normally think of playing it within another game, with a demo normally needing to be downloaded and played separately.
However, the first teaser for the remastered version of Spyro the Dragon could actually be found within Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy, with PS4 players in Europe, Austra🐎lia, and Latin America being able to enter a cheat code to unlock it.
As soon as Crash was brought back, gamers instantly began talking about Spyro, and the fact that the🎃y had foreseen this situation and put in the ཧdemo secretly is fantastic forward-thinking.
6 Movie Inspiration 🌸
Video games and movies have tons of crossover appeal, and quite often you will find small nods to movies within your faꦍvorite games, without even realizing it while you're playing, and Spyro is a perfect ಌexample of that.
Many of the different levels were inspired by movies, with the game being loaded with nodes to the Indiana Jones series,🎐 whi⭕ch any big fan of the classic movies will have noticed with careful inspection.
There are more examples though, as Cliff Town is actually heavily inspired by Star Wars, while the Beast Makes Hub is inspired by the legendary Apocalypse Now film.
5 ⛦4.8 Million 𒉰
Everyone knows that Spyro the Dragon is a hugely popular video game, but a lot of people likely do not know to what extent that is, with the fact that the original game sold 4.8 milliౠon units being a🍨n example of just how popular it was.
Hitting nearly 5 million sales for that time was an unbelievable feat, especially for a new I.P, which is why it is no surprise that the game is still spoken about so fondly amongst people who got t﷽o experience it at the time.
Hitting 4.8 million actually makes the original Spyro the Dragon the 17th best selling PlayStation game of all time, which is a fantastic st🍎atistic that it remains in the top 20 after all this time.
4 𒀰 Celebrity Voice Work 🌄
When it comes to Spyro's voice, it is Tom Kenny who is associated with the purple dra🌺gon, having done the voice work for the vast majority of the games, but he isn't the only person who has done the voice.
During the Legend of Spyro game series, the decision was made to bring in a popular celebrity to do the voice, thinking it wo🦋uld help attract more people 🐲to play, and Elijah Wood was given the green light to do it.
While Woodꦅ was fine in the role, it didn't quite connect in the same way as Kenny, which is why he is still the main man when it comes to Sp♒yro.
3 🌟 S📖lower Version
In America, became a major mascot for PlayStation, joining Crash Bandicoot as arguably the most well-known character for the console, but in Japan, the🦩 game never reached the same level of popularity.
One of the reasons for that was because,⭕ ♔for some reason, the game ran much slower in Japan than it did in Europe and America, with different camera functionality and lots of hint posts, it wasn't the same free-flowing game.
The game did offer a 'Director's Cut,' but all that did was unlock the regular version from the U.S., so it remains unclear why they didn't just release that in the first place because it was that poorly received that Year of the Dragon never got released in Japan.
2 The Police ꧅ 𒀰
The Police were one of the greatest bands of all🐽 time, and that could be one of the reasons why the Spyro series has such an incredible soundtrack throughout the games, as Police drummer, Stewart Copeland composed the music.
Copeland was in charge of making the music for the game, ensuring that it was as whimsic𒀰al as the rest of the game, immersing people into the world of Spyro which it cꦦertainly managed to do.
While he is still best known for his work with The Police, in the 🍷gaming world, Copeland is still seen as a legend for his work on Spyroꦇ.
1 Using NASA 🎃Science
There is a reason that flying with Spyro the Dragon feels so incredibly natural and fun, and th💖at is because the designers used actual science in order to make it feel as realistic as possible.
That's right, it is literally rocket science, as a NASA rocket scientist was brought in by the development team of the original game to do the mathematics of Spyro's 🐬flying, ensuring that it was as authentic as possible.
The designers wanted to make sure that nothing was clunky and that it was a smooth experience, especially since this was such a🌼 big part of the🌃 game, and it certainly worked out.
