With the Starfield’s galaxy being the size it is, many side narratives fill the systems that aren’t key to the game’s main story. Whether you join the Crimson Fleet, the United Colonies or the Freestar Ran🐲gers, each faction provides a questline impressive in its own right, b🌄ut here are some of the best standalone missions we’ve experienced in the settled systems.

8 💃 Space Frog From Outer Space ജ

a space frog poster visible on the wall in the colony

The mining colony Cydonia on Mars is hardly the nicest city out there. It’s old, mostly underground, and periodically shakes when particle detonations occur. Venture into the colony’s living areas and yoꦺu’ll run across Renee Shelby, a young girl who passes her time in the underfunded outpost by drawing a character called Space Frog from Outer Space.

She’ll task you to put up six of her drawings around the facility in order to bring some much-needed cheer to life as a miner in a backwater colony. Return to Renee having done so, and regardless of whether you attempt to extort this child for cash, you’ll receive a whopping 12 credits. Alongside t❀his, you’ll also get the far more tangible benefit of being able to place Space Frog posters in your outposts, which is a huge win because they’re🌺 great.

7 𓂃 Run The Red Mile ♋

a player approaching the starfield red mile

In the Porrima system you’ll find The Red Mile, a hotꦰel and casino on the creatively named Porrima III which offers a unique form of entertainment. If you’re feeling particularly brave or foolhardy, you can offer to run The Red Mile, a challenge which involves either killing or avoiding a number of 💟fearsome creatures in order to reach a signal tower at the path’s end.

Returning wit🎃h all of your app🅷endages intact and functional will earn you a modest credit payout, plus the fame of completing this infamous challenge. Since the quest is replayable, you can choose to rerun The Red Mile whenever you like, to seek further profit. Do this enough, and you’ll be rolling in credits in no time, and likely put the casino out of business.

6 🥀 Overdesigned

The Kepler R in New Atlantis

This quest is given by Constellation member Walter Stroud, the Scrooge McDuck-like figure who bankrolls much of Constellation’s work. Once you&r❀squo;ve worked some jobs with the starship magnate, you’ll earn enough of his trust that he sends you to resolve a design dispute in the company. Your job is to get the stalling design team back on track, a task made more difficult by the designers’ animosity towards your obvious lack of experience.

As most of Walter’s missions are, this one focuses on diplomacy and persuasion, and successfully petitioning the project leader to increase the budget will result in the creation of the Kepler R. An enormous monstrosity of a ship that attempts to include every team member’s ideas, the Kepler R is a clear sign you should never be allowed near a design office again. Complete the mission, though, and you'll receive one free of charge, which at the very least is a hugely expensive ship.

5 Tourists Go Homꦺe

starfield the monster costume

It is a truth universally acknowledged that tourists are the bane of everyone not currently on vacation's existence. If you visit New Homestead on Titan in the Sol System, you’ll meet no shortage of these holidaymakers, come to gawk at one of humanity’s earliest off-world colonies. Although many of the residents appreciate the economic value of regular visitors, there are some who would rather see them gone, namely Dr Giuliana Lakota.

Should you visit the good doctor she will soon makℱe her ill feelings towards the tourists clear. She believes that they behave so recklessly that she spends most of her time caring for them rather than the settlement’s residents. The solution? To don a realistic monster costume and scare some sightseers, of course! Although the mission is simple, it’s replayable and earns you a credit reward each time, alongside a costume of your💯 own on your third scaring.

4 💫 Juno’s Gambit

Juno's Gambit Starfield

Starfield’s setting offers Bethesda a myriad of possibilities for side quests inspired by classic Science Fiction. So who can blame them for the side quest Juno’s Gambit, a moral quandary on the rights of a sentient AI to exist? The quest can begin in numerous systems while you’re orbiting a planet,🌠 upon which you’ll notice an Ecliptic vessel attacking a ship which appears to just be drifting.

Doing away with Ecliptic will allow you to dock and board the ship, where you’ll find an enormous computer and two Ryujin Industries employees ওspeaking in hushed tones, while a third lies lifeless behind them. Discussing the predicament with the employees reveals that Juno is a NASA AI they discovered in space, who killed a technician for trying to install a control board on her♎. Whatever decision you make, you’ll surely find yourself grappling with the ramifications afterward. And really, isn’t that what Science Fiction is all about?

3 Mantis

Mantis spacesuit in a cage in Starfield

A side quest titled Mantis will first appear on your radar early, during the second main story mission, The Old Neighbourhood. While you 🍌and Sarah Morgan carve your way through seemingly never-ending spacers, you’ll loot a note titled Secret Outpost! Which you’ll likely shelve as it leads to a star system whose recommended level is far above your own.

Should you brave it early on, however, you will be amply rewarded for your perseverance as it turns out that said secret outpost was in fact the lair of legendary vigilante The Mantis. Survive through yet more waves of spacers, as well as The Mantis’ own traps, and you’ll reach the core of the lair, a Batcave-esque underground base. This location is full of rewards for your hard work, including the vigilante&💃rsquo;s legendary armour and a starship called The Razorleaf, which will serve you well through much of the game.

2 𝔉 Groundpounder

starfield groundpounders in a desolate looking area

A sprawling side mission that comes from an innocuous random encounter, Groundpounder takes you to the Altair system where you’ll hear a distress call📖 from Freestar Private Mahoney. Answer the call, and you’ll land at a research station crawling with spacers, where the fighting starts the moment you leave your ship.

Finding Private Mahoney reveals that a squad of United Colonies Marines have also answered the call and are unexpectedly working to aid their rival faction. After rescuing both🍰 parties, you’ll meet Lieutenant Torres and Captain Myeong. These cooperating squadrons ask your aid twice more before a final, large-scale battle back at the research base again. This lengthy mission tells a self-contained story of humanity and compassion between the rival factions of the colony war, and also offers a ton of loot, credits and XP over its course.

Astronaut Posing In Paradiso in Starfield

Should yo🌸u head to the Paradiso Resort on Porrima II, you’ll notice a large, mysterious ship floating in orbit above the resort. Docking with the ship is a tense affair, until you board and discover that the ship is human-operated but insular and is crewed by the descendants of a group who originally left Earth two centuries ago, after their leader correctly predicted that a terrible disaster would befall humanity.

You’ll then be asked to play diplomat between the naive people of the Constant and the business wiles of Paradiso’s executives and be forced into difficult decisions which could hurt your morals or your wallet. One thing’s for sure though, you’ll never take your grav driv🌄e for granted again.
