How To Target Engines
Before you can target engines in combat, you'll need to unlock the Targeting Control Systems Skill from the Tech tab.
This allows you to lock on to different targets on a ship, such as the engines, shields, and grav drive.
The ship targeting functionality allows you to do more than just blow ships out of the starfield. You can disable ships instead and board them.
The more you upgrade this skill,ܫ the easier it will be to lock on to ships mid-combat.
How To Disable Ships In Combat
In combat, when up against other ships, you can lock onto ships by pressing E (on PC) or A (on Xbox). Doing so will take a few seconds, but then you can press R (on PC) or X (on Xbox) once the process is complete.
Certain quests will grant bonuses or additional loot 🦹for choosing to di🥀sable ships over destroying them.
This will slow down time and allow you to target the engines. Using the arrow keys (on PC) or the left stick (on Xbox), you can move between the engines, the shields, or the grav drive, and fire at them.
When they turn red, they are disabled.
How To Board And Loot Ships
Once the ship is disabled, you can move in close and board. Doing so allows you onto the ship, where you can search the vessel for loot. You'll have to kill the crew onboard often times, but you can commandeer the ship and claim it as your own.
If you do happen to get too close to a ship and it explodes, you can interact with the wreckage to loot for parts. This lets you salvage the ship for materials you can use to improve your own.
