The looming red sphere behind this structure suggests it's on an orbiting moon, and the glittering mechanisms inside hint at a deliberately constructed, yet cosmic purpose that seems to hold a key to something very valuable. The player character is shown floating powerlessly before it, until it swallows the galaxy whole with a swirl of stars and flash of light. Like Skyrim, it's not setting up the most original story, but it does feel like a story, and that's a start.
We know we're not only going to be stuck on this planet. There are 1,000 of them, remember? Plus, in the second half of the trailer Todd Howard talks to the camera while the game goes on behind him, and we see a desert planet, a lush verdant world teeming with dinosaur-like creatures, and the inside of an industrial complex - like I said, it will be a big game. I'm still worried 1,000 planets is too big, both for enough of them to be well developed and for my own interest in wading through them. But I feel like I know what I'm heading towards now, and that's enough.
