Steamworld Build Review: There's Gold In Them Hills

There's no need to gold rush.

Progress like that doesn't come easy. Before you know it, you're sprockets deep in messy production lineꦺs and negative resource gain. But it doesn't need to stay that way. Here's everything there is to know about the𒀰 Engineer buildings.

Paved Road

Steamworld Build Paved Road

Build Cost

100 Dollars, 0.125 Tools (Rounded up)

Upkeep Cost

None

What It Does

Connects buildings

The Paved Road is a direct upgrade to the Dirt Road. It extends the range of service buildings and warehouses to about 38 road tiles.

Every eight road tiles you build costs one additional Tool resource. I🌺f tools are light in stock, we recommend being mindful of thꦚis metric.

Delivery bots from warehouses will also move faster on this road. This means deliveries are made🦋 faster and to more buildings.

Engineer Residential Upgrade

Steamworld Build Engineer Residential

Build Cost

See Below

What It Does

Provides Up To 50 Dollars, 20 Engineers

The heart of the Engineer tab, this building houses the Engineer bots, providing workforce and tax income.

Unlike other buildings, you don't build this one. Instead, you upgrade an existing Worker Residential, costing the listed resources. Note that the Worker Residential needs to be 100 percent happy to qualify for an upgrade. Likewise, this building can later be upgraded into an Aristobot Residential at 100ඣ percent happiness and a high enough Milestone.

Like the Worker Residential, this building will have a changing series of requirements to maintain steambot happiness and population. With each new Milestone, the number ཧof♊ requirements will rise, but so will the total tax income and Engineer population.

Engineers have quite a few consumed resources. They do not consume them at a 1:1 ratio, however, allowing one Production building to support several Residentials. This table will organize this info by how much each Residential consumes per cycle, the building used to produce that resource, and how many Residentials that building can support at standard efficiency.

Due to how small these fractions get, there is a margin of error, and you may experience slightly different numbers at higher population levels.

Sand Sifting Factory

Steamworld Build Sand Sifting Factory

Build Cost

1,200 Dollars, 6 Boards

Upkeep Cost

8 Dollars, 10 Engineers

What It Does

Generates Sand every 15 seconds

The Sand Sifting Factory works similarly to the Forester. It needs an open space of sand around it to have 100 percent "fertility." If it does, it will generate Sand regularly, which is used in making G♏lassware and Thread (for some reason).

Glassblower

Steamworld Build Glassblower

Build Cost

1,800 Dollars, 10 Boards

Upkeep Cost

8 Dollars, 15 Engineers

What It Does

Converts 1 Sand into 1 Glassware every 30 seconds

The Glassblower makes Glassware, which is used to create resources like Moonshine, a staple item in the Engineer diet.

Moonshiner

Steamworld Build Moonshiner

Build Cost

1,400 Dollars, 8 Boards

Upkeep Cost

8 Dollars, 10 Engineers

What It Does

Converts 1 Glassw🌟are and 1 Cactus Water into 1 Moonshine every 30 seconds

This is one of the earliest buildings to require more than one input resource. It distills Cactus Water into glass bottles, making the Moonshine resource. This is a Happiness resource for Engineers, with a single building producing enough Moonshine to support 25 Engineer Residentials.

Since one of the defining qualities of real-world moonshine is that it's produced illegally, and these buildings have permission to exist, it's technically not producing moonshine, just alcohol.

Saloon

Steamworld Build Saloon

Build Cost

2,000 Dollars, 12 Boards

Upkeep Cost

24 Dollars

What It Does

Provides Engineer happiness

This is a service building that, despite the theme, doesn't require any Moonshine itself. Engineer Residentials within range will receive Happiness benefits accordingly.

Use Paved Roads💞 to extend howꦓ far this service building will reach.

Tool Maker

Steamworld Build Tool Maker

Build Cost

3,000 Dollars, 10 Boards

Upkeep Cost

9 Dollars, 15 Engineers

What It Does

Converts 1 Scrap into 1 Tool every 15 seconds

From this point on, Tools will be an extremely common and in-demand resource, needed for everything from roads and buildings to underground facilities. For the early game, it may be worthwhile to have two Tool Makers running, at least until the Aristobot phase.

You can supplement your Tool supply by digging up Tool-filleꦦd dirt nodes in the un𓆏derground levels.

Surveyor Office

Steamworld Build Surveyor Office

Build Cost

2,400 Dollars, 4 Boards, 5 Tools

Upkeep Cost

24 Dollars

What It Does

Provides Engineer happiness

By Milestone 6, Engineers will develop an interest in more than just alcoholism. This is another Service building, so be sure to place it within range of your Engineer Residentials.

Pickaxe Maker

Steamworld Build Pickaxe Maker

Build Cost

6,000 Dollars, 10 Boards, 10 Tools

Upkeep Cost

18 Dollars, 30 Engineers

What It Does

Converts 1♈ Wood🐲 and 1 Scrap into 1 Pickaxe every 30 seconds

By now, you'll have explored a bit of the Dusty Caverns in the underground mines. You may have noticed that Miners need a Pickaxe to dig through Sandstone.

Sandstone will be prevalent through every floor of the mines, so be sure to keep plenty of Pickaxes on hand🌼 until you know for sure you're done exploring each floor.

Because of its above-average Engineer demand, consider placing an Item on this building that reduces the workforce requirement.

Sheet Metal Factory

Steamworld Build Sheet Metal Factory

Build Cost

11,000 Dollars, 15 Boards, 8 Tools

Upkeep Cost

8 Dollars, 15 Engineers

What It Does

Converts 1 Ironium into 1 Sheet Metal every 15 seꦚcon🃏ds

While it's used in many buildings, the need for Sheet Metal will be most prominent for Bridges. Many areas in the mines are across from chasms that your bots can't cross on their own. Building bridges covers the gap♔ at the cost of Sheet Metal and a few other resources.
