Summary

  • Everyone expected Eve to be overtly sexy, and she is... kinda.
  • While she dresses provocatively, she has no personality to back it up.
  • As a result, she seems like a missed opportunity to create a more interesting character.

If you've heard anything about 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Stellar Blade, you've heard about its heroine: Eve. You might say that promotion for the game has been... pretty much entirely centred around Eve (that'll come to you later). And I've been conflicted on the issue. The loudest voices have drawn the battle lines pretty clearly - 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:gamers on on🅺e ♎side, journalists on the other. Tale as old as time, or at least as old as 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:outrage fuelled YouTube channels. But it all seems a bit pointless once you play the game ꧑itself.

I have had my eye on Stellar Blade ever since it was revealed under its original name, Project Eve, and that was in part because of the protagonist herself. Eve has a cool design and instantly made me think of Bayonetta, Rayne, Juliet Starling, and most of all, 2B. But she quickly became a beacon in the culture war, and t༺hat made it pretty embarrassing to be excited for Stellar Bla🃏de.

Eve Isn't Too Much - She's Not Enough

There was a feeling that e🙈vil, sneaky games journalists wou🍷ld trash the game just because Eve was too sexy, but my problem is the opposite - she's not sexy enough. She's barely sexy at all. There's no commitment to anything around Eve in Stellar Blade, who is too passive and is barely acknowledged by the world she exists in.

It's true that if they had gone in the extreme other direction and made Eve only care about looking and being attractive, that would get criticised too. 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:But there's a middle ground that developer Shift Up doesn't even dip its toes into. It feels a little bit like someone who spends all their time writing erotic fiction and drawing women in skimpy clothing going to a bar, saying "Hi" to a pretty lady, then running away giggling.

In the game, Eve can wear an array of costumes including skin-tight leather, bikini, bunny one-piece, cheerleader, latex magician, silk microdress, silk dress slit at the sides, vinyl miniskirts, and nothing. Add to that the jiggle physics and the ability to shorten her ponytail to 168澳洲幸运5ꩵ开奖网:allow you to ogle the des▨ign uninterrupted, and Eve is clearly an attractive character♉ designed to be🍌 attractive.

The problem is she seems entirely unaware of this, and nothing in the world suggests she's attractive either. It doesn't need a complex romantic arc, but the characters I listed at the start are all acutely aware that they're dressing provocatively and have a personality to match. Eve has no personality to speak of. She helps people out so maybe you'd reach for 'nice', but she's also often cold and blunt in conversation due to her having no thoughts beyond fulfilling the next quest.

Eve Lacks The Personality To Pull Her Look Off

Stellar Blade - Eve is looking down at an enemy with her sword

There's no sense of personhood or ownership from Eve. The type of outfits she wears require extreme levels of confidence and self-assuredness to wear, regardless of how you look physically. But Eve doesn't resonate this confidence. She's not shy, as that would also mean needing to feel vaguely real and having emotions beyond 'I want to head to this quest marker' or 'I will fight this boss'. It's not even a steely, stoic determination that drives Eve forward without the need for frivolous feelings. She is just a blank slate. She's tofu in a bikini.

This wouldn't be so bad in normal circumstances. Character writing is often a weaker aspect of video games, especially those built around set pieces more than narrative developments. But here, not only do all of the other characters fail to steal the spotlight from Eve to mitigate her bland personality, Eve had also been elevated to a higher status before a thumbstick had even been flicked.

She has been built up too much, and her design could have been iconic if she was up to the task of filling her own shoes. But it feels like she’s playing dress up in outfits much too big for her. Eve is posing in front of a mirror saying "I'm a ballerina", "I'm a firefighter", "I'm a badass heroine kickstarting a new era of video game protagonists". But she doesn't even believe it, it's all pretend.

Those who want Eve to be pretty and have revealing outfits will have the🌄ir wish granted by Stellar Blade, and there are enough outfits that offer enough of a tease that many will be satisfied. But Eve is not the icon many of us w🌼anted her to be, and while some may parade Eve as a victory against wokeness, the fact is gaming would be very boring if everyone was like Eve - and it all proves the best way to get truly hot female characters is to see them as people first.
