Getting Ready To Plant - Soil Quality, Tilling, And The Third Field

What's The Difference Between The Fields?

At the start of Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life, you'll have two fields to begin with.

The poor-quality soil field is right next to your Coop, and it has the poorest soil quality. It's only a 6x9 field, making it ideal for growing fruit trees.

You'll need to use fertilizer diligently here to upgrade your crops, if you're trying to do so.

The medium-quality soil field is on the other side of the water pump from the small field. It's also a 6x9 field, but with better soil quality, it's better for growing planted crops.

There are even a handful of crops that only grow in decent-quality soil, so be mindful when planning your planting pꦚatterns.

How Do I Get The Third Field?

After you've begun making hybrid crop seeds with Vinnie over at Takakura's house, speak to Takakura when you see him after you've made at least one hybrid seed.

It's then that Takakura offers to clear the back of the farm of its trees to create a third, bigger field for you. To do so, buy the Amazing Field from the Ledger whenever you're ready. It'll cost you 60,000g for the work.

After that, just wait a few days for Takakura to work. He'll call you over when he's finished, and the result is a 9x24 field that boasts extremely fertile soil.

This field is both the biggest field in A Wonderful Life, and arguably one of the best ways to grow better crops.

You'll use quite a lot of energy tending to the whole field, but the payout is often worth it with a larg♊e harvest of great crops!

Till Your Fields Before Planting

To get started with your fields, you need your Hoe for tilling the soil before you can get to planting.

Your initial Hoe can only till one square of soil at once, but the Hoe can be upgraded for better efficiency in the fields. Upgraded tools can be charged to clear multiple spaces at once, so it's worth the price when the upgrades become available.

Like all tools, using your Hoe to clear your field depletes a bit of energy for each use. Be sure to keep some meals on you to keep your energy up on big planting daysꦦ!

Seeds, Explained - Where To Get Seeds, Growing Seasons, And How To Plant Seeds

Where Do You Get Seeds?

Seeds can be obtained in one of three ways. To get seeds in A Wonderful Life, you can:

  • Buy them from Vesta over at her farm.
    • Speak to Vesta, Cecilia, or Matthew while they're in the field, storage house, or their farm house (while they aren't doing something else), and they'll ask you if you're there to shop. Say yes, and they'll offer you every base seed in the game for a price.
    • You can buy in bulk to save some time, but you can only buy one item at a time.
  • Harvest them in the Seed Maker by placing one piece of fully-grown produce into the machine, and receiving two seeds from it in a couple of days.
    • This is helpful to make more money on fruit trees, quickly make more hybrid crop seeds, or to save some cash re-buying seeds to plant the same crop again.
  • Breed them with Vinnie in Takakura's house beginning in Year Two. By feeding Vinnie two different crops or seeds, he can make you hybrid crops, opening a whole new catalog of farming options beyond the second year.
    • Check out our Hybrid Crop Guide for more info.

Be sure to water plants throughout the growing process - unwatered plants won't grow and will wither!

Only Plant Seeds That Are In-Season

When checking the details of the seed in your inventory, the game gives you it's growing seasons. These are the times of year when this crop will grow - crops planted out-of-season will wither.

Plenty of crops can grow in multiple seasons, meaning you don't have to worry about rushing to time a harvest before the end of one.

If something grows for two seasons in a row, for instance, you can safely plant a crop on your farm at the end of the first season, and the progress of its growth wil🐭l be unaffected as a new season begins.

The exception to this is fruit trees. Fruit trees flower in one season and then can be harvested the next, but the fruit tree needs a whole season to grow before it can flower.

For 💜example, an Apple Seed planted on Spring One will begin to flower on Summer One, and the first harvest will be on Autumn One.

How To Plant Seeds

When you have your seeds selected in your inventory, you can begin to plant your seeds after plowing the field.

If you have the Field Cursor Display on, a square you can plant in will turn blue to let you know it's ready to go.

The highlighted area by default is one plant at a time, but you can charge your seed throw if you're trying to plant up to nine of the same seed in one toss. They land in a 3x3 square pattern.

You can also do this with fewer than nine seeds - move around to rearrange where you'd like them to land, and release the button when you've found a configuration you like.

Use Fertilizer To Increase The Grade Of Your Crops

buying fertilizer story of seasons a wonderful life how to grow better crops farming guide farm tips

While it's not required for crop growth, tossing some Fertilizer onto your crops once the seeds are planted can work to upgrade the crop's grade.

You'll need to fertilize your crops several times to reap this benefit, which adds up in cost as your farm expanꦺds.

If you've got low-grade seeds, you can still grow higher-grade crops if you're diligent with fertilizing the fields during the growth season.

This is especially effective when fertilizing fruit trees, as the fertilization impacts each harvest when the time comes. You'll need quite a lot, but you can easily upgrade your lower-tier fruits this way.

For more info on ♔crop grading, check out our Crop Grade Guide.

You can simp🦋lify this process by buying the auto-🤪fertilizer from the ledger.

Harvest Your Crops On Time To Avoid Withering

Throughout the growth season, you can interact with your crops to check on their growth cycle. The game will give you updates on the growth stage of t✤he plant this way, helping you check in on where they are to schedule your harvest.

When the time comes to harvest plants, the square turns yellow to let you know that this crop is ready to go.

Be sure to harvest as soon as plants are ready, lest they go bad, as withered plants cannot be salvaged, and will need to be cut down with the Sickle to clear the land.

Once everything is harveste🙈d, congra⭕ts on snagging the fruits of your labor - literally! Now you can use your crops to make meals, offer as gifts, or sell for cash.
