Whether you love or hate 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Suicide Squad: Kill 🅺the Justice League (or as most people feel, are largely indifferent to it), there is one sentiment that has been repeated as often as a defend the base side quest - the devs tried. Many criticisms, and reviews both positive and negative, have highlighted this as a caveat against the game's flaws like stale mission design, shallow narrative, and overwhelmingly pointless upgrades. I'm sure the devs did try, but why does that matter - or more specifically, why does that matter here?
Nobody mentioned this when Gollum flopped last year. I played both (didn't finish Gollum, my brain is not made of cheese), and Suicide Squad is a significantly better game, it's true. But if we're using the refrain that the devs meant well, quality shouldn't come into it. They either tried or didn't. Gollum's devs tried, surely? It's not just games that are poorly received, either. Palworld is a huge success, yet has been constantly dragged down by controversy around its inspirations. Did these devs try less, 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:since they so clearly riffed on Pokemon designs? Less than the devs who instead used established comic booඣk characters with decades of lore behind them?
None of this is to have a go at the devs of Kill the Justice League, nor at the game itself. The character writing is superb, and some of the visuals (both on a technically impressive level, and in terms of artistic direction) are examples of best in class for this generation. It will be curious to see how Kill the Justice League fares at the end of year awards and reflections - even its biggest fans wouldn't put it up for GOTY, but there are parts of the game unlikely to be bettered by many in 2024. I do not doubt the devs tried hard.
168澳洲幸运5开奖网:TheGamer Aces, our yearly awards, celebrates the small parts of games that make up the whole rather than just 'best game in this genre' approach other awards take. Check back at the end of the year to see if Suicide Squad makes the cut.
But why does working hard matter? Is it not just assumed that, given video games are very hard to make (especially with the pressure of a triple-A environment), all devs work hard? It's a qualifier we roll out selectively and it's strange to see us move in this parasocial direction of wanting to make it clear that it's nothing personal. But like devs working hard, shouldn't that be a given too? That critics aren't making it personal?
I'm sure some out there do, just as I'm sure there's probably a lazy developer or two in a studio of 2,000. But mostly, devs work hard on games and critics discuss them honestly. If we need to say 'I know they tried' instead of just a clean 'I don't think this is very good', it tarnishes the whole thing. When we say something is excellent, do we really mean it is excellent, or do we mean 'I like it and also like the people who make it'? By bringing effort into the equation, we try to say it's nothing personal, but it actively makes it personal. It explicitly makes considerations for the feelings of those behind the game rather than just the game itself.
It's the same train of thought that led to people buying 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Hogwarts Legacy to 'support the devs', 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:a sentiment that means nothing unless you buy every video game everywhere to support the game development arts. The team at 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Rocksteady tried, but that does not and should not impact the experience of playing it. I might even say it cannot - since all devs try hard, that would make Kill the Justicไe League par for the course.
There is some history here. People wanted this game to do well not just because it's nice when games are good, but because the characters mean a lot to people and because Rocksteady gave us the Arkham trilogy. That's one reason why this (and Redfall) gets the 'tried' conversation while Gollum and the like do not - if a studio has succeeded before, people become emotionally invested in the logo.
But it's important that we can move on from these sorts of conversations. How much effort was put into something should only be a factor in cases where a game has attempted something fresh and innovative, providing a new experience, and might get points for trying even if it doesn't quite stick the landing. That's not what this is. It's a by the numbers looter shooter that has good writing and even better character models. I don't care that they tried. None of us should.
