168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Summer Game Fest started with a bang, giving us the surprise reveal of 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Prince of Persia followed by the one-two punch of 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Mortal Kombat 1 gameplay. We got a 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Spider-Man release date, 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:a Lies of P release date, and release windows for 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Palworld, and a host of other stuff. Nick Cage was there, and he even seemed to enjoy himself. There was a lack of diversity, with no women on stage whatsoever, but all in all, it was a fairly solid opening to the weekend of reveals. However, at that point a lot of people switched off. I stuck around for Day of the Devs and Devolver's showcase, and saw the Twitch viewer counter dwindle throughout the rest of the evening. Those of you who left missed out on some of the most interesting games showed off, so here's a quick rundown of the standouts.

Henry Halfhead

Henry Halfhead was my personal favourite of the Day of the Devs showcase, an odd little game where you play as half a head who can become anything he wants to be. In order to make his bed, Henry must merge with each of his pillows (think the inverse of Kirby's abilities), jump onto the bed, and then do the same with the quilt. He finds a rubber duck in his toilet tank. He becomes doors to open doors. He's Henry. He's half a head. He's Henry Halfhead.

Beastieball

I will admit to getting a little sick of 'we take X genre and make it an RPG', but I will make an exception for Beastieball. It's Pokemon, except you're building a volleyball team. Is there more to the game than that? Sure. Will anyone need to hear anything else to be convinced? Not a chance.

Été

Été is a painting simulator where you wander through a grey world and add spots of colour to it. While it sounds like a grander, 3D version of Chicory, it seems more like PowerWash Simulator but with paint instead of water. You can wander and explore wherever you like, and can upgrade your abilities by painting things, so it's more about the journey than the completion. How much depth it has to sustain itself remains to be seen, but games that challenge the idea of combat and violence as reward, especially from first time studios, are always intriguing.

Eternights

Eternights had the strangest trailer of the lot, with the central character Yuna (who looked and sounded like a V-Tuber avatar) breaking the fourth wall to advertise the game personally. Described as a dating action game, it seems like an even-more-meta Boyfriend Dungeon hiding some dark secrets for players to discover. There are shades of Doki Doki hiding beneath the surface of this one. It's sure to be incredibly divisive, but for those it lands with, it just might cut deep.

Helskate

I said I was sick of 'X genre as an RPG', but Beastieball is not the only exception. The game’s lead designer (credited simply as “Steve” in the trailer) worked on Tony Hawk's Underground and tells us that while making THUG the team noticed it was part of a different reality and built on an RPG system of stats, and that germinated the idea of Helskate. It's a skateboarding combat roguelike with goth demons - it's second only to ol' Halfhead in my list of most anticipated.

Baby Steps

Onto Devolver now, I think this is the one most worth highlighting. While we saw gameplay from Wizard with a Gun (whose animated trailer seemed better than the game itself), a reveal of Human Fall Flat 2, and yet more from The Talos Principle 2, the standout reveal was Baby Steps. We play as a loser man baby climbing a mountain, and we control each of his legs separately, like a more advanced QWOP. It's a "literal walking simulator" according to Devolver, and probably the most unique pitch across the whole evening.

The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood

This game technically wasn't at the Devolver Showcase, but it was one of the trailers shown off in the countdown period, and it looks pretty good. You get to make your own tarot deck. 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:I just think it's neat.

A Lot of Volvy Bullshit

I don't really know how to explain it to those who didn't witness it. Devolver has a mascot named Volvy, which is a vole(?) with a big hand. We were treated to an extensive fake documentary about how Volvy has starred in all of Devolver's games, including an interview with Volvy's equally fake creator, and an edgy '90s phase where Volvy had an earache. Then the reveals were shown to us as if the new robot Volvy, Volve-E, had AI generated them from audience suggestions. Then the robot shit itself. Then the creator bashed it in the head with a rock while imagining his own original Volvy being caught in a bear trap and needing to be mercy killed via having its skull caved in with a nearby rock. I still have no idea why it happened.
