The Mario series is a cornerstone of video games, and as such, many of Nintendo's most faithful followers have high hopes about what's coming with this big-budget feature film. From iconic game elements to subtle nods to Mario's past, here's everything we hope to see in The Super Mario Bros Movie.

8 ♊ A Nod To Captain Toad

Judging from the first trailer, the mushroom-like Toads should play a pretty significant role in the Mario film. We see Mario interacting with the iconic red Toad, which makes sense considering how much they hang out in the series. The poor little guy was even trapped in the castle's walls once upon a time.

Of course, the red Toad we all know and love received more of the spotlight after appearing in 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Super Mario Galaxy as Captain Toad and later in his title based on the 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Super Mario 3D World mini games. We hope that the similarities between Captain Toad and the backpack-wearing Toad that gives Mario a hand in the trailer are signs that we'll get a proper introduction to the good Captain at some point.

One nice surprise from our first Mario footage was the appearance of the tiny blue penguins from 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Super Mario 64. Residing in their icy kingdom, these little birds try - and fail - to stop Bowser's onslaught after he pulls up in his incredible flying airship.

Giving these little dudes a bit of a nod feels like a good sign of the level of care being put into the movie. Hopefully, it'll be full of 16𓄧8澳洲幸运5开奖网𝓀:small allusions to past characters and stages. You don't need to know why penguins are in the Mushroom Kingdom, but if you do, it adds a bit to the experience.

6 A 🐻Hint At Other🌺 Characters

On the other hand, there are quite a lot of characters in the Super Mario universe. From friendly Koopas and Goombas to sentient stars to baby versions of Mario and Luigi, who somehow interact with their adult selves from time to time, there's certainly no shortage of familiar faces to pull from. Adding too many could make the movie more like a who's who of Mario superstars than a fun adventure.

Instead, we're hoping that the movie gives us the full cast that's been announced so far, complete with Luigi, Peach, Donkey Kong, and more. With a stacked roster, we can afford to wait a bit for some of our other fan favorites, like Yoshi, King Boo, or even Wario, just as long as all characters are voiced by a random assortment of celebrities, 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:as is tradition.

5 At Least One Power-Up That Isn't A Fire Flower (And Also, A Fire Flower)

Super Mario 64 Metal Mario

Mario has gotten his hands on 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:various power-ups and abilities over the ye🥀ars, from the iconic Fire Flower to the Tanooki Suit to his more recent cat-like endeavors. The man has essentially become a dinosaur at this point.

With that being said, there's room for at least a few of these cool abilities in the movie. The Fire Flower is a must, but it'd be nice to branch out a little after that. A handful of handy abilities would be nice to see play out in true Hollywood fashion. Just imagine a big-budget Metal Mario plowing through enemies. So shiny.

4 𓂃 Warp Pipes, Brick Blocks, And Other Clas✱sics

You may feel like it's inevitable that we'd see things like secret Warp Pipes, breakable Brick Blocks, and other series platforming staples, but the implementation is what matters here. Sure, Mario shoots out of a warp pipe to enter the Mushroom Kingdom in the trailer, but aside from some neat NES sound effects, did it really feel like a warp pipe?

As much as this film needs to bring Mario's classic adventures into a modern age, it would be nice to see a traditional "Mario staring blankly into the void as he slowly descends straight down into the warp pipe" moment, if only for kicks. Knock a few coins out of those breakable-looking blocks, while you're at it.

3 An Allusion To Mario's Past Girlfriend(s)

Pauline - Mario Series

It's pretty clear that Princess Peach Toadstool is destined to be the apple of movie Mario's eye, which makes sense. The two form one of the most iconic video game couples in existence, and Mario's been saving Peach from the clutches of Bowser for years. But our favorite plumber friend has quite a history in the dating world.

There's Pauline, Mario's original girlfriend who's experienced something of a resurgence since appearing in 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Super Mario Odyssey. But the most infamous past relationship is undoubtedly Mario's past fling with his brother's princess of choice, Daisy. A small hint at this messy love triangle would be a fun little easter egg.

2 Some Humor For ꦏThe Grown Up Fans (Bu💯t Not Too Much)

Mario is one of gaming's most important and influential characters, with his first appearance in 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Donkey Kong being integral in saving the budding industry in the '80s. A ton of fans grew up on Mario's platforming magic, and you can be certain that those fans will be showing up in droves for this large-scale adaptation of the series.

Movies targeted toward kids starring characters that adults grew up with often face a unique challenge, attempting to balance the self-referential, tongue-in-cheek laughs with the bright and bubbly humor young audiences love. Mario has a legacy spannin꧙g over 30 years, so this film will ideally cater to both crowd🃏s.

1 Some Love For Luigi (But Not Too Muc🌞h)

Luigi's looks scared in front of the hotel desk

Mario's bumbling, fearful, green-wearing brother Luigi is already confirmed to be present in the movie, with a scene showcasing him running from a mob of enemies near the end of the trailer. Luigi is a fan favorite despite his clumsy, cowardly ways, and while the movie is certain to play up his more comedic aspects, he deserves a bit of the spotlight as well. He is one of the two Mario Bros., after all.

Of course, Luigi popping in to save the day isn't necessary unless Mario gets trapped inside 🌄a haunted mansion or goes missing unexpectedly. Combining Luigi's goofy, frightened personality and his heroic, heartfelt character could help The Super Mario Bros Movie feel like the love letter the series deserves.
