There aren’t many games out there that my husband, son, and I can all play together. At least, not many that we’ll actually enjoy. Bꦅut Super Mario Party Jamboree: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition was one we were all excited to play. That is, until I remembered my husband is such a Nintendo fanboy tryhard that he once convinced his then-teenage mates to play a Mario Party game with 50 turns, which meant they pulled an all-nighter to finish. He’s also a big WarioWare fan, which effectively means he’s the king of mini-games. So, I had my wo💧rk cut out for me.

During our first mammoth session of Jamboree TV, my husband was crowing with delight as we reached the end of the game be⛎cause he had the most stars. But he wasn’t smiling for long. When the additi𝕴onal stars were distributed for the person who travelled the most, alongside the unluckiest player, the winner’s crown ended up going to my son. My husband was not impressed, but both my son and I were grinning ear to ear.

No, it's the gamers who are wrong.

This is when Super Mario Party Jamboree shines brightest, with our own Stacey Hen💃ley scoring it four out of five stars. The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, which comes complete with Jamboree TV, elevates it to a whole new level thanks to 20 new minigames that utilise the Joy-Con 2 mouse features, built-in microphone, camera, and HD Rumble 2 features. But the real star of the show is Jamboree TV, or more importantly, you become the stars of the show.

Mics, Camera, Action!

The camera can be used so that your face appears above your chosen character, both in the Jamboree TV studio, as well as on the board, during mini♍games, and in other modes. We could literally see my husband grinning as he smashed miniga👍me after minigame, his smug face taunting us as we heard ‘No change’ turn after turn, until the tides would eventually turn.

There were a couple of minigames where the circular faces would get in the way, such as Lumber Tumble, where you must move across the correct bridge path before getting steamrolled. An opponent’s fa𝔉ce may accidentally cover the bridges you need to see. It wasn’t too frustrating though, as it added another element to laugh about as my son complained my face blocked his way and I raced through to the win.

Sadly, you cannot take scr🌠eenshots when using the camera, which isn’t unusual for party games like this.

You can also use GameChat to play Jamboree with friends online in a limited capacity, with only Party Rules and 30 minigames available at launch. You can use the camera so you can see each other’s faces and wi𝔉tness your friends’ dismay as you thrash them at yet another minigame. It’s not something I was able to try during review, and given my husband’s reputation as a Mario Party shark, I don’t know if our loved ones would ever take us up on such an offer.

Within Jamboree TV, there are a couple of new game modes in addition to being able to play Mario Party on a board, or even just smash through minigames to your heart’s content. Bowsꦛer Live features the iconic villain on stage in a concert setting, and players are split into two teams to duke it out before he rains fire down on the losers.

This was the mode that got you moving on your feet the most, and not only because we had to shuffle around to where it wanted us to be on the screen, whereas previously we selected our face using the camera and remained in a single position. One minigam🃏e uses the camera and has you bashing blocks above your head, and there was a Simon Says minigame where you had to sit down and stand up. Meanwhile, others use the microphone to push forward a kart or do a back and forth with Bowser where you have to shout and move around to fill up a gauge on-screen.

This mode was probably the most temperamental in usinᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚ⁤⁤⁤⁤ᩚ⁤⁤⁤⁤ᩚ⁤⁤⁤⁤ᩚ𒀱ᩚᩚᩚg the new tech, as if you didn’t frame yourself properly with the camera then it might not acknowledge you doing the actions, or even think the movement of the person next to you is you swinging your arm🎉s about. If you’re playing the Chicken Race kart game with the mic, you can absolutely trip up your opponents by speaking during their turn to make the kart go too far as well.

Again, we found it funny rather than frustrating as we used it to thwart each other all the more, but for those who want to play it with true sportsmanship, you’ll likeౠly find this a little annoying.

Finally, you have Carnival Coaster, a rail shooter mode where you work together as a team to shoot down enemies as you fly around a track with 🌌regular minigame intermissions. Each new mode adds a refreshing change of pace if you’re tired of rolling across the board or want something a little more spicy than just selecting your favourite minigames, but as always, the minigames are always the most important.

The Party Just Got Even Bigger And Better

The one thing I love the most about Mario Party over the years has never changed: there is a minigame for everyone. There is always one that you’ll excel at more than your opponents, and whenever you see it come around, you know the win is in the bag. I always love seeing which minigame that is for everyone I play with. For some reason my son couldn’t quite master Snag the Flags🎐, where you just walk around a sphere grabbing flags, but I was speedier on my feet than those two suckers. Boom!

Amongst the additional 20 minigames added for the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition are some of the best Super Mario Party Jamboree has to offer. The quirks and imperꦬfections of the camera and mic minigames aside, this take on Jamboree is a great way🌼 to showcase the new console’s tech.

Get a Grip has you working in pairs using motion controls, you’ll each be controlling an arm of a robot to climb up a wall, grabbing at the right time and working in tandem to scal🗹e it as quickly as possi꧒ble. You’ll have to scoop up ice cream in What’s the Scoop and make cones to order with a partner, aiming to outpace your opponents, or use the mouse controls to net fish in Net Gains and corral goombas in Goomba Scoopas.

My ꧑only real complaint is that I wish there were more minigames. Mouse minigames seemed to have the most with 14 added, mic games only have three, and there are only a couple of camera games, likely because the latter two are less refined and not every player is going to have purchased the optional accessory. Oddly, the camera minigames appear to not be selectable from free play at all, so I guess you’ll have to encounter them by facing Bowser on stage properly, despite the mic minigames from this same mode being in free play.

Even Your Granny Will Love It

Bowser Live stage in Super Mario Party Jamboree Nintendo Switch 2 Edition.

I can guarantee you that even your granny will bust a gut laughing playing Supe🌜r Mario Party Jamboree, and at least your sore loser uncle can’t actually flip this board. If you happen to own the original Switch version already, the upgrade pack is well worth it. And if you don’t, what are you waiting for? This is one of the best party games you’ll play this year.

It reminds me of the Wii era, which managed to capture the world by storm, gamers or not. You didn’t have to love Mario or even recog𒉰nise his little mustachioed face to want to own a Wii and improve your health balancing on a Wii Fit balance board, and it seemed like the world was taken by storm by the shiny novelty of a console with motion controls, and everyone wanted to have a go.

You’d whip the Wii out at family gathe✱rings and on festive occasions and everyone from your toddler cousin to your aging grandparents would grab a nunchuk and try their best at bowling, dancing, or whatever else your heart desired. Super Mario Party Jamboree is capable of doing the same. Pop it on when you next go to see Grandma, and find out which minigame she excels at best.
