A multiplayer online battle arena and third-person hero shooter, Brawl Stars allows players to battle one another or AI opponents in multiple game modes, each with a different objective. Players can select Brawlers that are unlocked through Boxes, the Brawl Pass, the Trophy Road, or purchased through the Shop to take part in battles. Players can also purchase Skins with Gems or Stꦍar Points, or unlock them through the Brawl Pass, which enables them to change the appearance, animations, and sounds of Brawlers.

Initially, Sup❀ercell planned to develop a mobile game that resembled League of Legends or Overwatch. According to Supercell's Frank Keienburg, "Our focus was on retaining a lot of depth while stripping away all the fluff. Brawl at its core is easy to pick up, but hard to master. This becomes very evident when you compare how different the game is played in different trophy ranges."

Supercell hosts the Brawl Stars Championship, an open tournament for players across the globe. The tournament consists of monthly in-game challenges that lead to regional online qualifier events. Last year, the World Finals were held in the fall with a $1,000,000 prize pool as well as an additional $500,000 that c♍ould be earned💙 through in-game championship offers.
