Resident Evil 4 might be the best remake we could have ever hoped for, but it is still exactly that - a third-person shooter with an abundance of charm and style to carry its extensive campaign. But when viewed as a survival horror, it falls short in ways Alan Wake 2 picks up the slack for and so much more.

Take the puzzles, which always feel grounded in the world of Bright Falls unless the paranorm𝓰al nature of the narrative demands otherwise. Saga can retreat to the confines of her Mind Place to piece together facts and🍌 events in a way that not only makes sense, but feels rewarding to pursue, like you’re engaging in real detective work.

It might involve parallel dimensions and a demonic cult, but Saga’s work is coming from a pl💝ace of intellect. It’s an approach to puzzle design the genre needs to learn from, and how much more devs can do with setting and tone so long as the characters and world building are strong enough.

Everything is genuine, whiꩵch is why the many ingredients that make up Alan Wake 2 work so well. It is unafraid to be scary, funny, and challenging - knowing the player is smart enough to meet it right in the middle.

Alan Wake 2 also understands how uncomfortable horror needs to make us feel, and our love for jumping at shadows and stepping into locations which are unsettling in small yet scary ways. The citizens of Bright Falls recognising Saga and expressing condolences for the death of a daughter who is still very much alive is scarier than any monster, while the game makes sure to shroud most of its enemies in s﷽hadow or familiar hallmarks, so it feels like we’re struggling to stay alive in a world similar to our own, but also demonstrably alien in its own right. I still get chills thinking about Raccoon City and the Umbrella Corporation, but not since Resident Evil 7 🧔or Silent Hill 2 have I felt truly uncomfortable trudging through horrific landscapes.

Every little thing about Alan Wake 2 cements an understanding of horror that others in the medium could learn so much from, especially in a triple-♔A space where the genre is still so reliant on action to attract a mainstream audience. Think outside the box and treat players with respect, knowing they’ll be intelligent enough to digest characters and themes which frighten so much more when you dig beneath the surface. Horror nee꧅ds fresh blood, and there was no game better than Alan Wake 2 to make the first cut.
