The Brain of Cthulhu is a pre-Hardmode Crimson boss in Terraria that is pretty much essential to game progression if you want the Tavernkeeper and Meteorites to spawn on your world. It isn't 100 per cent necessary to defeat, but it makes sense to defeat the Brain after the Eye of Cthulhu.

This guide covers some of the basics for defeating the Brain of Ctไhulhu, including how to summon the boss, some tips and tricks for E𝓀xpert and Master mode, as well as why you should bother defeating the brain or even farming it for resources.

How To Summon The Brain Of Cthulhu

The Brain of ꦑCthulhu is s🌞ummoned in one of two ways:

Destroying three Crimson Hearts in the Crimson biome, the alternative to Shadow Orbs in the Corruption biome, which spawns the Eater of Worlds.
Using the Bloody Spine boss summoning item, crafted with 30 Vicious Powder and 15 Vertebra. Vicious Powder is crafted with Vicious Mushrooms at a placed bottle, just a water bottle on a shelf or table. Later you can craft it at the Alchemy Table.

The Brain of Cthulhu can only be summoned in Crimson biomes. As of Terraria 1.4, destroying Crimson Hearts will no longer cause Meteorites to spawn. You must defeat the boss for Meteorites to spawn on your world. Here's our guide on the updated method of getting Meteorite.

How To Defeat The Brain Of Cthulhu

The Brain of Cthulhu has two main phases to deal with: the first phase the Brain is invincible, and won't take damage until you kill all of the Creepers that spawn. It will teleport around during this phase. In the second phase, once the Creepers are defeated, and the Brain will take damage and is particularly vulnerable to knockback. This makes it the only boss in the game🍨 that is weak to knockback. Here are some general tips for normal difficulty:

The Underground Crimson comes with its own built-in boss arena, the wide-open space in the center of the biome. You can build platforms here, with campfires, to make the battle much easier.
Piercing weapons make short work of the Creepers the brain spawns. A ranged weapon with Jester's Arrows is devastating, for example. You could also use Spears for the useful knockback on the Brain.
Explosives, like grenades, are also great at clearing out the Creepers quickly.
The fight is made much easier because the Brain drops loads of hearts whenever you hit it. This should provide some decent sustainability during the battle.

Tips For Brain Of Cthulhu In Expert And Master Mode

Extra preparation is pretty much essen🍸tial for defeating the Brain of Cthulhu in Expert and Master mode.

Everything has extra health in Master mode, including both the Brain and the Creepers that spawn.
The second phase will now summon multiple fake Brains. You can navigate around this by using a Hunter's Potion, as it will always highlight only the real brain -- this can save you wasting Jester's Arrows on shooting the fake Brain.
You need to watch out for the various debuffs the Brain can inflict (this makes it a harder boss than the Eater of Worlds in practice.) These are pretty much totally random but can be things like Poisoned, Cursed, Bleeding, etc. The Creepers also have a chance to inflict a debuff.

What Does The Brain Of Cthulhu Drop?

Here's a list of the items the Brain of Cthulhu drops in normal mode as well as Expert and Master mode.

The Brain of Cthulhu drops lots of Crimtane Ore, 40+ from one kill.
The Bone Rattle, a boss-summoning item (only a five per cent drop chance.)
The Brain of Cthulhu mask (a vanity item) and the Brain of Cthulhu Trophy (can be placed inside your house.)
