How To Farm Gem Trees

Terraria (1)

Farming Gem trees is a great way to get gems in the early game, and it saves you time scouring the walls of caves on the hunt for glowing gems. It might take a bit longer, but you can use the gems to craft a gem hook, or even a Gem Staff, one of the better 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:early-game mage build weapons.

Gemcorns are crafted with one gem and one acorn. For example, one Amethyst and one Acorn, crafted in hand. You don't need to be by a crafting station.

Gemcorns are then planted underground and will eventually grow into a Gem Tree of the corresponding gem type. The Gem Tree will drop zero to five gems of the type of gem you planted, as well as more Gemcorns (between zero and five), and some Stone Blocks. Even though the trees look like they're made of stone, you still need to cut them down with an Axe. They grow at a similar rate to normal saplings, although there are a set of conditions that have to be met for the trees to grow. Here's everything you need to know.

How Deep Do You Have To Plant Gemcorns?

Terraria gemcorns

Gemcorns must be planted in the Underground layer or any deeper biome. Sometimes, you can even find naturally spawning Gemtrees in the Cavern layer, but it's pretty rare.

You need a wide-open space with plenty of room for the trees to grow into. Light does not impact the growth of trees at all, so you can place down torches to illuminate the ⛎area if you want to. A large area might take time to carve out, but you will be able to plant a gem tree of every type.

How Long Do Gemcorns Take To Grow?

Times vary a lot for Gemcorn growth. Sometimes it can take one in-game day, sometimes it can take several. This is much like the normal rate of regular, above-ground saplings. Don't panic about your Gemcorns not growing right away. If you've noticed one tree already grow, it means you're farming them correctly, and the others will grow eventually.

Are Gemcorns Worth It?

Gemcorns are useful in the early game to acquire plenty of gems, which you can use to craft a gem staff or collect gems to sell for gold. Because you will need plenty of gold to transition into Hardmode with (to purchase Leaf Wings, for example) it's a good idea to set up even a small Gemcorn farm very early on.

Remember, Gemcorns will sell for the same value as their corresponding gem. So, even if you don't want to plant more Gemcorns, you can still use the excess Gemcorns to generate a steady profit.

Why Are My Gemcorns Not Growing?

Gem trees require a very specific set 🍃of conditions to ♚actually grow.

  • They must be planted in the Underground layer or a layer below.
  • They must be planted on Stone Blocks.
  • Light level does not impact the growth of Gemcorns at all. Don't worry about placing torches, or not placing torches.
  • You must place your Gemcorn saplings at least three blocks from one another, otherwise, they won't grow.
  • The ideal space above a Gem sapling is 16 blocks for maximum growth. Any less than 16 blocks and the tree will grow very slowly if grow at all. Less than 16 blocks of space above the sapling will also cause smaller trees to grow, which will produce fewer gems and Gemcorns.

Tips For The Best Gemcorn And Gem Tree Farm

Growing Gemcorns can be a bit frustrating if you don't set things up properly, hence why the question "Why aren't these Gemcorns growing!?" is a common one. Here are some tips to help you get started.

  • Further apart, the better. Though Gemcorns need to be three blocks away, at least, carving out a very large underground farm is probably a better option. Like trees on the surface, the further apart your saplings the more likely they are to grow quickly.
  • Diamond and Amber sell for the highest price of any gem, so you can prioritize these gems if you are using the Gemcorns to farm for gold.
  • You can cover the entire Underground farming cave with background walls to prevent mobs from spawning. You just need to leave the gaps behind the trees as an ordinary cave wall, if you don't the trees will not grow. Some mobs will still spawn even if you replace the background wall, but a lot less if you just leave the cave as it is
