Mining

Mining for resources is one of the main ways to get your hands on resources in The Cycle: Frontier. But, before you roll your eyes at the idea of mining resources from clumped rocks in yet another game, there's an interesting thing worth knowing about how mining works.

Instead of clattering a pickaxe against the hitbox of some rendered rubble for a few minutes until it goes pop, here nodes don't need to be completely destroyed. Mining spots are composed of individual chunks that you need to bash away to reveal what's hidden inside. Which can sometimes be nothing or Nickel, but if you're lucky you can get some rare elements now and then. Also, it means you only have to give each mining site a few quick smacks to see if there's anything valuable inside before moving on, which can be quite the timesaver. A good tip is to aim for the sparkling parts of the node as underneath these is usually where the ores are.

Scavenging

For example, 𒐪inserting charged cells to power up and unlock security doors blocking hidden areas, upgrading Data Drives using Uplinks to sell for more credits, or hunting down special keycards that will open secure rooms filled with extra gear.

Faction Quests

As you drop down to Fortuna III to seek your own piece of the planet, you can earn a little extra cash by completing quests for the different factions around the Hub. There are three in total, they are the ICA, Kordlev, and Osiris.

For examp🃏le, Osiris are the resident scientists and their jobs wi🔯ll ask for samples from plants and animals on the planet, but they’ll give you access to some fancy science fiction-looking tech. Kordlev the industrialists want minerals and their rewards are access to more efficient mining tools. Then there’s the ICA who will ask for scavenged parts and materials to repair the space station with their rewards being a wider variety of weaponry than the other two specialist factions.

For Prospectors tired of being torꦑn to shreds or old pros looking to learn a few new tricks, here are a few handy tips for PvE in The Cycle: Frontier worth keeping in mind.

Have A Plan

When you’re dropping onto Fortuna III it pays to have a game plan as the longer you’re on the planet, the more dangerous it can b💮ecome. So make sure you have an idea of what you want to do, get it done, and then leave just as quickly before someone else manages to spot you.

For example, if you’re harvesting alien parts such as Striders, head right to the nearest pack and start culling them quietly. Or if you need ores, start scanning as soon as the door of the drop pod opens and head there quickly before they’re gone. Think of every drop as a heist, only the cost of failure is losing all of your gear and a frustrating restart.

Watch Out For Bad Weather

The weather on Fortuna III is unpredictable at best. Wild ꦍand dangerous storms will blow in and blanket entire regions of the map in lightning-spewing storms that you definitely don’t want to be caught out in. They appear and drift across the gameworld at random, so be prepared to run if you see on𝓀e heading your way.

The storms substantially limit visibility, and whilst the rolling thunder makes for a good muffler for gunshots, it’s not worth engaging in combat during a downpour. It’s easy to get turned around in these gales and the lightning bolts that rain down from the sky can shorten your health bar to zero in seconds if you’re not careful. Your only re🎶al respite from them is to hide in a cave or a building until they pass and hope that no other Pros♓pectors decide to drop by.

Don't Engage In PvP

It may seem counter-intuitive considering how many weapon vendors the game throws 🐈at you in the Hub, but partaking in PvP if you’re planning on scavenging is a very bad idea. It’s easy to get gunned down fast and with how🤡 expensive item replacement can get, you can run out of funds fast if you bounce between scouring the planet for loot and fighting other Prospectors.

There’s no guarantee that another player will have loot worth gambling a gunfight on and the noise from the encounter is sure to draw other Prospectors. It’s much more lucrative to strip mine nodes and scour through boxes for scrap. So stick to being stealthy and if you see another player, hunker down and wait for them to pass. It’s never worth the 🔜risk.

Loot Locations Are Randomized

Unlike other games where you can memorize locations of where the most exotic loot is, with The Cycle: Frontier that’s just not going to work. This is because the location of gear is completely random. So areas that were once lush with drops on one expedi🤪tion could be completely 𝔍empty on the next.

Plus, since maps stay open for hours and with so many other Prospectors coming in and out, most areas, especially on the outer edges of the map, will be completely stripped of resources. You're going to need to explore areas thoroughly each time if you don’t want to go home empty-handed.

Know Your Danger Ratings

One thing worth knowing is the Danger Ratings, as it’s much more than just a friendly warning on your Hud when you’re out exploring. These little notes let you know the type of area you’re walking into and what sort of threats you can expect to encounter. They’re rated Low to High and the threats increase in strength depending on the map you’re playing on.

For example, Bright Sands has a wider variety of dangerous areas ranging from Low to High that contain Striders, Rattlers, Blast Ticks, large packs of predators, a large number of Elites, and some pretty tanky monsters. Whereas Crescent Falls is solely High-Level Danger areas, so you’re going to be running into some really large and hard-hitting creatures. Keep an eye on that little marker when it pops up because if you don’t have the gear to get through safely, it’s usually worth going in a different direction.

The Knife Is More Useful Than You Think

Though your entire inventory gets tossed to the void whenever you die, not all of your equipment is completely lost. The Cycle: Frontier lets you keep the torch, binoculars, and more importantly, the knife.

It may seem like a useless melee weapon, best used when you have no ammunition left, and that’s mostly true. 🦂However, it’s very good at silently killing low-threa🐽t monsters such as Striders and Blast Ticks as it’ll chunk their health bars in just a few swings. In a game where every little noise could draw the wrong sort of attention, having a silent option to deal with small threats can be pretty helpful.

Avoid Crescent Falls If You’re New

It really cannot be stressed enough that if you’re a new player, avoid Crescent Falls until much later. If youജ thought Bright Sands was difficult, the other map is an absolute train of pain for first-timers and it might sour yo๊u on investing more time in the game.

It also can take several hours' worth of grinding to get close to the type of equipment that will keep you alive on Crescent Falls. Monsters are stronger, other Prospectors are better equipped and your lifespan, if you’re new, can 𒈔be measured in seconds. So leave it until later if you’re still figuring things out.
