You need to go to Winterhold and fight off Magical Anomalies threatening the townsfolk. With relations between the College and town poor as it is, letting the anomalies run amok would only make things worse. This isn't a long quest, but you'll need to complete it before you can plan your next course of action.

Starting Containment

A group of mages speak next to the corpse of a mage on a snowy day.

Coming to your senses after the magical explosion, you speak to Mirabelle, who is slumped by a pillar, about the state of the Great Hall. She tells you to look for the Arch-Mage.

Your search is short. He is dead, lying in the courtyard and surrounded by staff. Tolfdir tells you that Savos had not survived the injuries Ancano caused. There is no time to mourn as the town is overrun with Magic Anomalies and you have to step in and protect the town.

Though it is tempting, you cannot loot Savos' body.

Protecting The Town

Rushing out into Winterhold, you will need to kill ten Magic Anomalies. These floating enemies can be difficult to hit and will harass townsfolk if given the chance.

As you rush out of the College, Faralda asks you what is going on. This provides you an opportunity to recruit her for help in the town. She will bring Arniel Gane along if recruited. Their help will be invaluable.

The Magic Anomalies are small and hard to hit. Their usual tactics involve flying toward their target evasively and attacking with health and stamina draining attacks at close range.

Be wary of using spells that have an area of effect, such as Flames and Fireball. These spells may hurt nearby townsfolk.

Their innate magic resistance makes them exceptionally hardy foes to magic users. At the same time, their evasive movement and mobility make it challenging to use bows and melee weapons against them.

Wiping out all ten of the Magic Anomalies will take longer than you might expect. However, if you are patient and willing to mix magic attacks with physical attacks throughout the fight, you w🥂ill eventually clear them out.

Finishing Containment

A pair of mages speak in front of a swirling magical artifact in a dark room.

With Winterhold safe, you return to Mirabelle at the College. Unable to find a way to stop Ancano and realizing that there is little time to stop the Thalmor, she tells you to retrieve the Staff of Magnus.

When you respond that you are going to Labyrinthian, she realizes that the Arch-Mage had left her with a Torc and instructions that she will know what to do with it when the time comes. Giving it to you alongside his Amulet, you start the next quest, Staff of Magnus.

Savos Aren's Amulet will boost your Magicka by 50 points, greatly increasing your reserves. You will find it useful in the quest to come.
