Having recently lost a team of scouts to Imperial capture, Galmar Stone-Fist♋ has hatched aꦿ plan to turn a tactical defeat into a strategic victory, and you are just the rebel he needs to pull it off.
Having been assigned to the Hold by Ulfric, yo𒉰u are sent by Galmar to meet up with another team of scouts. They are planning toᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚ𒀱ᩚᩚᩚ take over Fort Neugrad by using the prisoners as a second attacking force already within the Fort itself.
Starting Rescue From Fort Neugrad
You get this quest when you report to Galmar Stone-Fist at the Falkreath Stormcloak Camp. Ulfric will send you there during Liberation of Skyrim, the overarching quest that tracks your progress through the Skyrim Civ🌞il War.
You will not do this quest if Falkreath was traded to the Stormcloaks in Season Unending.
You will need to link up with Ralof and his scouts near Helgen, where the game first started. There, he will suggest that you infiltrate Fort Neugrad, taking a hidden path to enter the prison directly and free the prisoners without being detected. He will come to help you when you reach the courtyard.
If you don't fancy sneaking through the Fort, you can simply charge right in though you will still have to free the prisoners after you kill all the Imperials.
Sneaking Into Fort Neugrad
The path Ralof suggests involves sneaking down a hill south-east of his position, just under the walls of the Fort. Make sure to extinguish any light sources to make the approach easier.
You will have to dive into the lake, looking for a hidden cave on the north side, at the foot of the Fort. Swim right inside to enter Fort Neugrad, right next to the cells.
Once inside, keep your eye out for a patrolling guard by the prison cells. Kill him quietly to stop him from calling for help. Taking his key will allow you to free the imprisoned Stormcloaks who will proꦇmp𒈔tly arm themselves and help you fight the Imperials.
Being discovered here is not the end of the world. You'll still be able to capture Fort Neugrad, though it might involve you figh⭕ting alone for a time.
There will be another guard patrolling the area above, though he will not pose a significant threat. When all of the prisoners are free and armed, follow the quest marker to find the door leading to the courtyard. Ralof will come to help as soon as you exit.
Capturing Fort Neugrad
With Ralof's help, the Fort is easily captured, though breaking the wooden barricades will help him help you more quickly. Keep an eye out for archers as you fight Imperial soldiers. You may have to sweep interior areas to capture it.
Once the Fort has been cleared out of the Empire's lapdogs, you can return to Ulfric to announce your victory and get a promotion.
You can find the Fort Neugrad Treasure Map on the roof. It leads to a treasure chest.
