Generative AI is a scourge on creative industry. TheGamer’s stance on generative AI is clear. It has no place in the video game industry, nor our own. Of course there’s that good AI that controls NPC guards and makes them feel likeﷺ real people, but that’s a whole different kettle of fish.
That bri🤪ngs us to The Finals. Embark Studios’ exciting shooter feels really good. I like the gunfeel (a rarity in modern games), the movement is slick, and the destructible environments make every ༒match incredibly thrilling. But its commentary team and characters are all voiced by AI.

I’ve already explained why this is inherently bad. Nexon could have paid a real person to do this job, they could have spent a few days in a booth and recorded some killer announcements. Think “Boom, headshot” from Call of Duty or “Triple kill” from Halo. 🔯Those lin🅠es are iconic because of the performances of the people who voiced them. They’re boring sentences on a script, and an AI doesn’t have the personality to turn them into something iconic. You don’t need to hear it from me, though, because the commentators in The Finals are all kinds of terrible.

First of all, we need to talk about their intonation. It’s off nearly once a sentence, saying things in ways that no real human being would even think of. I’m not talking tiny little levioSAR not leviOsa details here, really ordinary wo🌄rds suffer from butchered pronunciation on a regula🥂r basis.
Even more egregious are the accents. One of the comment🐻ators straight up loses theirs midway through sentences. Admittedly anyone who’s seen a Russell Crowe movie will know that this isn’t a problem solely with AI, but I haven’t heard a video game make this much of a mess of an accent in years. I don’t know any audio professional could hear this &lsquo𝔉;British’ accent or the pronunciation of Kingfish and Powerhouses and say it sounds great, but it might just be one of those things that developers have been told to double down on no matter their true feelings.
AI has no place in gaming for many reasons, most notably because it could put thousands of developers and actors out of work. But the biggest reason 🤡that AI shouldn’t be in video games is because it’s terrible. It’s a blight on The Finals, making an otherwise polished ga﷽me feel unfinished, and it pulls you right out of the action every time you hear an awful voiceline.

AI has no such insecurity, and therefore puts in minimal effort in scraping the internet for voice lines to generate, ending up with criminal pronu🤪nciations and half-baked accents.
AI doesn’t have to worry abou🐠t never getting another gig. AI doesn’t have to worry about getting mocked on social media for putting out a bad performance. It’ll get mocked, sure, but it’s not a conscious entity that will feel bad about it. AI will do the bare minimum to get by, surfing the waves of mediocrity before getting replaced by a different, similarly inadequate computer program. There’s no drive to improve, there’s no inherent creativity that takes pride in a good performance. There&rꦦsquo;s no humanity. But there’s also no cost.
The sooner that CEOs and executives realise that we don’t want to play games with shoddy AI-generated content in them, the better. Don&rsqu𒆙o;t cheap out on us, because no price cut is worth losing real creatives over. Have a listen to the commentators in The Finals and you’ll understand why.
