The Initiative's upcoming game might be a remake of the original, that is if the principle technical director at the studio's LinkedIn profile is to be believed.
We've been hearing about The Initiative's Perfect Dark game for what feels like a very long time now, but there's not much that we actually know about it, and the fact that it's being worked on by Crystal Dynamics and The Initiative. One thing that had previously been mentioned is that the game is a reboot of the series, but it seems like that might have changed at some point.
, the LinkedIn profile of Tyler Thornock, The Initiative's principal technical director, mentions Perfect Dark as one of the projects that he's worked on recently. However, rather than just calling it Perfect Dark, Thornock refers to it as "Perfect Dark (remake)".
Ever since Perfect Dark was first announced, it's been referred to as a reboot and not a remake, so it seems like something has changed during the game's long development cycle. It wouldn't be too much of a surprise, though, as remakes have proven to be all the rage lately and it's something that Microsoft hasn't really had a go at just yet. Why not start with Perfect Dark?
It's worth noting that just because Perfect Dark is a remake doesn't mean that it's not a reboot too. It's possible that the Perfect Dark remake is considered both a remake and a reboot, bringing the series back with a bunch of different tweaks while also having familiar setpieces, levels, and characters. There's certainly a middle ground between the two terms.
Equally likely is the possibility that Thornock simply misspoke when putting "remake" on his LinkedIn profile instead of "reboot". We'll have to wait for the game to finally be shown off again until we know for sure, but Perfect Dark's development has been so long in the tooth, it'll just be good to see it again, no matter the format.
