However, if you haven't engaged with either of those two products, you may still have heard of Riley but probably have no idea who she really is. If that's the case, this piece will provide all the information you need to know.
Watch out! There are spoilers fo﷽r the Last Of 🦩Us games and comics in this article.
Origins
Riley was born a few years into the fungal outbreak, so she never knew what the world was like before people started getting infected. To make matters worse, when she was a child, her dad got infected. As a result, he turned into a monster and killed Riley's mother. The young girl was then forced to kill her mutated father.
With her parents gone, she spent the rest of her childhood in a military school. She didn't appreciate the way they did things, particularly in regard to their totalitarian rule. Riley preferred the idea of true freedom and a proper government.
Riley And The Fireflies
While the Fireflies are a controversial group in the Last Of Us universe, Riley was a big fan growing up. She shared thei𓆉r opinions on the military and how th🥃e post-apocalyptic world was being run.
Her love of the group is proven by the fact she kept a poster of their leader and went to the effort of learning the Fireflies charter by heart. In her teen years, she became desperate to join the faction. In fact, it was her dream.
One day, when sneaking out of her school at night, she and Ellie met the Firefly leader, Marlene. Naturally, she was incredibly excited by this, but the leader refused to let her join the group, saying she had no idea what it was like to beꦅ a Firefly. When Riley persisted, Marlene got aggressive with the girl, even going as far as to threaten her.
Marlene's rejection left Riley devastated. However, she didn't give up on her dream to become a Firefly. Sometime after that first meeting, Riley found and followed a member of the faction. This led her♔ to Marlenไe once again.
This time the meeting went very differently. The leader was glad to see Riley again, revealing that their first interaction was actually a test. She wanted Riley to show that she was truly committed to becoming a member.
Now that she proved that, it didn't take long for her to get welcomed into the fold.
Meeting Ellie
Sometime before she became a member of the Fireflies, Riley met Ellie. The two made their acquaintance the day Ellie joined the military school that Riley attended.
Ellie was getting beaten up by some bullies when Riley made the save. The two didn't immediately hit it off afterward, though. In fact, Riley stole the new girl's Walkman. Ellie got it back, and later that night, she caught Riley breaking out of the place.
Ellie managed to convince Riley to bring her along. This served as the start of their friendship.
Riley And Ellie's Relationship
After a tricky first day, Riley and Ellie quickly became friends. The two of them would sneak out of the school and go on adventures together.
However, after Riley joined the Fireflies, she didn't see Ellie for a while. Eventually, she met up with her friend and took her to the mall. She mainly did this because the Fireflies were moving her to Boston, and Ellie couldn't tag along because Marlene wouldn't allow her to be a part of the faction.
Ellie wasn't exactly happy when she discovered Riley was leaving. Yet, she still continued to hang out with her at the mall. After all, it could've been their last adventure together. They had a brilliant time on that day. And the two teenagers even kissed, indicating that they were more t🥂han frien꧟ds or, at least, on the way to being more than friends.
Riley And Ellie's Final Day Together
Unfortunately, that day at the mall would be their last together, but not for the reasons the girls expected. While having a good time, the two were ambushed by a pack of infected runners. They both tried desperately to escape. Sadly, they couldn't run forever, as they both got bit, meaning they were infected.
At this point, they had the option of ending their lives themselves so that they wouldn't turn. However, Riley didn't like that plan. She preferred to cherish every second they had left together. Because of her immunity, Ellie didn't turn. Riley wasn't so lucky, and passed away shortly after.
