“Why don’t you say whatever speech you’ve got rehearsed, and get it over with.”
The Last of Us 2 begins right after the events of the first game. Joel explains what happened in Salt Lake City to his brother Tommy, giving players a nice little recap of the end of the first game. There is also a touching scene where Joel gives Ellie a guitar and sings her a son♉g that will become the crux of the game.
“If I ever were to lose you... I’d surely lose myself…”
Four years later, Ellie and Joel have settled into normal life in Wyoming. Here we meet Ellie’s friends Jesse and Dina, the latter of whom becomes Ellie’s lover for the remainder𓄧 of the game.
Switching Perspectives
Then the game switches perspective, and we are introduced to⛎ Abby and ⛦Owen. They are climbing the mountaintop outside of the town, looking for “him.”
After encountering a horde of infected, Abby is saved by Joel and Tommy out on patrol. She tells them they can head back to the lodge with the rest of her team for safety. Once they are there, Abby’s team attacks Tommy and Joel, and it’s revealed that Joel is who✃ they were looking for.
When Joel doesn’t return from patrol, Ellie rushes off to find him. She stumbles on the lodge, where she finds Abby and her team torturing Joel. After wrestling her𒆙 to the ground, Ellie watches as Abby kills Joel by striking him in the head with a golf club. The team then knocks Tommy and Ellie out, letting them live.
“My friends’ problems are my problems.”
Some time later, Tommy disappears in pursuit of Joel’s killers. Ellie and Dina pursue him to Seattle, where they encounter Abby’s larger group the Washing Liberation Front, or Wolves as they’re called in the game𝓰. From here, the main events of the game are interspersed with flashbacks between Ellie and Joel.
After surviving an initial encounter and stabbing one of Abby’s group, Dina and Ellie take shelter in an abandoned theatre, where Ellie learns that Dina is pre𝓀gnant.
When they learn that Nora - a member of ꩲAbby’s group - is located at the hosp♈ital, Ellie heads out and encounters Jesse - Dina’s ex-boyfriend. He followed them out there to help in any way he can.
The group must also survive the other faction in Seattle: the Seraphites - a cult that rejects the technology of the old world and are engaged in a power struggle with the WLF aไft💝er their peace treaty fell apart.
At the hospital, Ellie tracks down Nora and tortures her for inf🅘ormation before killing her. This is when she learns that Abby has gone AWOL and is hiding out at the Seattle Aquarium.
Once there, she finds Mel and Owen. After confronting them to find Abby, Owen tries to attack her. Ellie responds by shooting Owen and stab🥃bing Mel in the neck. It isn’t until she is dead that Ellie realizes she is pregnant. Tommy a꧂nd Jesse find her having a panic attack and take her out of the aquarium.
The next day🌸, Jesse and Ellie wake up to Tommy yelling in the lobby of the theater. As they enter, Jesse is shot and killed by Abby, who has Tommy held on the ground.
She demands Ellꦺie come out and face what’s coming to her.
“We let you both live and you wasted it!”
The clock turns back three days, and the player now ex🅺periences the chain of events from Abby’s perspective. As Ellie’s story does, Abby’s perspective is interspersed with flashbacks. In these flashbacks, we learn that Abby’s father is the surgeon Joel killed to save Ellie.
Withꦦ the Fireflies effective♛ly dismantled, Abby and Owen find their way to the WLF and become top-ranking soldiers in the group. After being together for years, Abby and Owen break it off.
On the first day in Seattle, ﷺOwen goes missing. Instead of following orders, Abby decides to track down Owen to find out what happened. She escapes witꦗh the help of her friend Manny, who is later killed by Tommy.
Along the way, she is captured by the 🐷Seraphites and is preparing to be sacrificed. She is saved by two “heretics.” They are Yara and Lev, two younger Scars who have abandoned the religion. After escaping the Scars, Abby leaves them on their own.
After tracking down Owen, she learns that he is abandoning the cause because he is tir𓃲ed of the cyclical violence. He has heard that there is a group of Fireflies meeting in Santa Barbara, and he wants to take Mel and Abby down there on a boat he is fixing.
“You’re a piece of shit, Abby.”
After finding Owen, Abby - in a rare act of kindn💙ess - decides to go back and save the young heretics. After amputating Yara’s arm, the team decides to take them to Santa Barbara.
However, when Lev runs off to save their mother from the Seraphites’ island, Abby and Yara are forced to pursue him. Me🥃anwhile, the WLF has planned a full-scaled invasion of the island on the same night.
After finding Lev, they decide to get off the island by heading through🍒 Haven🧔 - the
main village of the Se🦂raphites - and stealing ꦚa boat.
The group is ambushed by WLF, where they encounter Isaac - Abby’s former leader. Yara sacrifices he🅘rself and kills Isaac, allowing Lev and Abby to escape. After fighting their way to the village, the two ride through the burning town and secure a boat.
When they get back, Abby discover🐭s the corpse🧔s of Mel and Owen.
“Oh Ellie, I think they should be terrified of you.”
In the present, Abby shoots Tommy in the head and 🎃proceeds to duke it out with Ellie. Abby eventually overpowers Ellie. Dina rushes in to save her, but Abby overpowers her too.
Abby is about to slit Dina’s throat when Lev stops her. Her younger companion convinces her to spare them, and Abby warns Ellie that she better not see them again. Time jumps forward, and Ellie and Dina are living on a peaceful farm, raising Dina and Jesse’s child. Ellie is still racked with guilt over not getting revenge for Joel, and t🍌hat guilt is exacerbated by Tommy. He survived the shot to the head, and has dedicated his time to tracking down Abby. He believes she is in Santa Barbara, and he wants Ellie to go after her.
At first, Ellie declines, but the thoughts of Joel 🅰eventually drive her to go after Abby. Dina tries to stop her, but Ellie is unshakeable in her desire for revenge.
🦂Once she reaches California, Ellie discovers that Lev and Abby have been captured by a group of slavers called the Rattlers. After infiltrating their base and freeing the slaves, Ellie discovers Abby and Lev being crucified on the beach. Ellie cuts them down, and all three are about to escape in boats and go their separate ways.
Eꦛllie won’t let Abby leave, though, and the two fight in the shallow water of the beach. After pushing Abby down into the water, she bites off two of Ellie’s fingers. Ellie decides to spare Abby and let her leave.
When she returns home, Dina and the baby are gone.🔜 She tries to play Joel’s guitar as comfort, but her missing fiꦰngers have ruined that too.
In a final flashback, Joel tells Ellie if he could do it all over again he would still save her from the Fireflies. She says she doesn’t think she can ever forgive him, but ܫshe would like to try. This is one of the last things she told him before he died.
“What is the downside of eating a clock? It’s time-consuming.”
The Last of Us Part II is a sprawling emotional game that makes players ဣquestion the cycles of violence we repeatedly find ourselves in, and it makes us wonder if anyone is beyond redemption.
