So far, it’s been incredibly faithful to the first game, p♑erhaps to a fault, with its identical dialogue and shot composition. Is Joel Going To Die In The Last Of Us TV Show?

For months, I believed this to be the case, but a﷽fter seeing the first released images from the second sea🍨son and a bunch of behind-the-scenes photos and footage, I now believe HBO is going to really do it. They’re going to kill Joel and tell this story how it’s meant to be told.

All signs point to a hole in one for our boy Joel in the second season. But why exactly does it seem so likely at this point? Everything we’ve seen emerge so far seems to hint at the show once again riding the line of authenticity. It will expand upon Part 2’s story much like it did in Part 1, but I doubt it will diverge heavily from the major plot points, and that definitely means Joel will lose his life at the h♔ands of Abby in the opening episodes.

Let&rsqu🍃o;s take a look at the first official screen released by HBO, which seems to depict a scene in the village hall shortly after Ellie finishes dancing with Dina, only to be verbally assaulted by a homophobic old man. Joel steps in to defend his surrogatඣe daughter, but with tensions still high between them, after finding out the truth behind the Fireflies, Ellie scolds him for it. It is one of the final times they will ever see each other before Joel’s death, and judging by the look in Pascal’s eyes, he is dealing with the ramifications of his actions here in a major way.

The second image features Bella Ramsay’s Ellie in what I assume is the supermarket filled with infected she and Dina clear out on their routine run at the start of the game. Either that, or one of the buildings that preludes Eugene’s underground weed farm. It would explain the winter clothing, crowded yet blurred interior, and shotgun presumably pointing towards some infected corp♚ses.

The look on Ellie’s face is one of fear and relief, and it would certainly line up with the events of the first image when you consider that both are likely taken from either the first or second episode. HBO has since confirmed season 2 will not cover the full s♋tory of Part 2, so we’ll see it split in multiple seasons, perhaps covering both Ellie and Abby’s story.

What Does This Have To Do With Joel Dying?

I’m getting there! My belief that Joel is definitely biting the dust comes from how both images point towards an authentic retelling of the second game, or at least its opening. Joelཧ is killed after failing to return from his run in the midst of a storm, letting his guard down enough and saving Abby, only to be lured into a group of outsiders with the꧋ sole goal of killing him.

Ellie is also trapped in the storm, and is too late to reach Abby and the Wolves before the worst takes place. Ellie s𝔍napping at Joel during the dance helps plant the seeds of regret that he will take to the grave, a blow that is only softened by a scene right at the end of the game that shows the father and daughter duo wanting to try and fix their relationship, only for one of them to be taken away.

, riding Shimmer into the centre of the city t🌟o explore and discover where the Wolves might be. , a key location in Part 2 that I’m not sure the show would bother including if Ellie wasn’t on a revenge mission. All signs point to golf.

We will see Ellie and Dina likely visiting the queer bookshop, the synagogue and several other key locations from the game’s first act, picking out the big moments and likely cutting down instances of combat and exploration🌺 in favour of pure, unbridled narrative. But there also comes an opportunity to expand on the material despite remaining authentic, taking all the game does and depicting it d𓂃ifferently.

At least I hope it does this while keeping Joel’s ꦚdea𝓰th as a cornerstone of the plot.

The Biggest Hint Is In Joel’s Facial Hair

One thing about Pedro Pascal in recꦛent months that fans were very quick to notice was his lack of facial hair. , indicating that his filming for this season is over, and he can move onto other, less hairy projects.

If his character was indee🌠d surviving or playing a larger role in the narrative, surely he would have stuck around, or returned later on to film oth♛er scenes that still required a consistent appearance. I bet they filmed all his scenes, flashbacks and all, before entering production of more ambitious parts of the show, where I’d see Ramsay as the main focus.

It’s bittersweet, but the right decision for Joel’s character, no matter who is behind the camera. If things go in the direction I think they will, Joel won't be sticking around for very long in the second season.
