As far as I know, mental health professionals didn’t exist in the rural Jackson community Joel and Ellie became a part of in the first game’s conclusion; I guess it was more important to protect from bull𝔍et wounds and infectious bites than to make sure your anxiety and depression were in check. But mental health is important, and in a society which aims to recreate what humanity once was and strives to be, it makes sense to consider how inhabitants are dealing with the trauma of trying to survive in a broken yet thriving worl♎d.

In the trailer we only catch a tiny glimpse of Abby as she is being crushed benea๊th a barb♌ed wire fence weighed down by infection. In the game, this is right before she is saved by Joel.
Joel needs something to fight for, to cling to and offer purpose in an otherwise meaningless life. So when Ellie turns against him in Part 2 as she begins to find out the truth, it breaks your heart. Doubly so when Joel is murdered just as those emotional𒈔 wounds are beginning to heal, leaving a void soon to be filled by insatiable vengeance. Joel confiding all of this in a therapist instead of his brother is a huge change, and one that reshapes how the show will approach its otherwise faithf♓ul narrative.
“Did you hurt her?” the unnamed therapist asks Joel during the teaser. To which he tearfully replies, “No, I saved her.” A tear falls from Joel’s eye as he says this, which tells me that 🌜he feels regret about his past actions, enough to seek out professional help to both rationalize his decisions and try in vain to repair a fractured relationship that means everything to him. When speaking to Tommy about this in the sanctuary🅺 of an abandoned garage on the edge of town, Joel is spilling a dirty little secret he prays will never see the light of day.
Considering it's a television show that isn’t held by the same restraints as the source material, I would love for the second season to fill in more of the gaps in the timeline. Whether through flashbacks, hard-hitting therapy sessions, or all-new characters and narrative arcs.
He doesn’t want anybody else to know, because if they did, he would be a monster. While there is no guarantee that El🍒lie’s death would have ended up with a cure, he took that possibil𒐪ity away not just from the human race, but Ellie. Before she even had a chance to react or have her say or make sure her young life would amount to anything, it was taken away from her. Now she has to live with that regret forever, and so does Joel, and I hope it eats away at him more than anyone else.
Don’t get me wrong, I 𒅌think Joel is deserving of forgiveness and that his death by golf club at the hands of Abby was needlessly brutal. But in her eyes, this was the man who killed her father and took away everything she ever knew. Such a thing was going to have consequences, so for Joel to face them is moral karma at its most balanced. He seems begrudgingly accepting of his fate in the game, and with regular therapy sessions under his belt, maybe he will come to accept his own demise that much quicker in the HBO adaptation.
We don’t know if Ellie or Tommy encouraged Joel to take up therapy, or if he realised on his own behalf that asking for help outside his familial circle was a good idea. Given the show has already cemented Joel as a veteran of Operation Desert Storm, he’s no stranger to both the physical and mental toll such things🌄 can have, or the psychological evaluations members of the service are asked to go through.
In this instance, he is choosing to help himself and to become a better person that deserves forgiveness from those around him, even if he perishes long before that ever becomes even a distant possibility. It represents a man who is living with ingrained regrets that will never be erased, but a drive to address, understand🅘, and better yourself in spite of that is a stor🃏ytelling decision that can only improve an already excellent story in The Last of Us Part 2.
