Gameplayꦑ starts as your standard survival stuff: clear out some goblins, light a fire, craft a sleeping ꩲbag, you know the drill. But no sooner have you started doing the mining – at this point it hasn’t yet become utterly tedious – than you’re told how to build platforms and walls. While this could be used for building a house from scratch, you’re better off utilising one of the ruins your ancestors left behind. They look better, for a start, but they also house crucial equipment that you can repair.
The only feasible use for these ramps and floors is to build towers for yourself in combat situations. Well, it’s all my party of ad💛venturers could think of, anyway. I’m sure some people use them for scaling cliffs in order to mine better materials or for creating your own shortcuts, but we mostly built platforms during combat to give ourselves brief respite from goblin onslaug🐠hts.
While we made our own fun – the Fortnite analogy is appropriate, if clearly an unintended mechanic on the developers’ part – combat is awful. Swing your weapon at your opponent, and again, and again, and again. They might swing theirs in return. Might. While the variety of opponents is numerous, the only difference between them is how many hits they take to go down. And, while many of Return to Moria’s offerings can be enjoyed with friends, nothing redeems this 🐓part of the game, to the point where I actively avoided combat purely because I didn’t want to spend five minutes clicking my mouse. It doesn’t help that – either by bug or design – blocking with a shield makes you impervious to damage from any direction, making it the best weapon in the game and an easy way to win almost any fight.
An unavoidable mouse-clicking exercise is mining, which is at the centre of the survival gameplay loop. Mine stone to build equipment, use the equipm💛ent to turn ore (mined too) into ingots. Make ingots into actually useful things like hammers and axes and shields. Mine more materials to use your hammer to repair mighty bellows and progress further. Then venture onwards, ever onwards, into the depths of Moria.
Moria itself is beautifully rendered, with locations extrapolated from the mos𓆏t fleeting mentions in Tolkien’s work. The 🐷Elven area you come to second (your route is procedurally generated, but it seems you tackle the zones in the same order each playthrough) adds some much needed light and greenery to the game, but my favourite areas are the dank and mushroom-infested depths, as the stinking humidity practically seeps out of the screen. It’s a shame, though, that the areas present few differences between each other and the gameplay loop barely changes from the initial hour to your last.
Fast travel is unlocked far too late,💟 and the constant backtracking to bases in order to sleep, craft, or eat is an unmitﷺigated slog. It undermines any progression you make, and the fact that you have to build the same basic equipment at every new base just adds to the repetitive feel.
In many ways, Return to Moria feels the exact opposite of 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Shadow of Mordor. Shadow of Mordor was a great game with 16✅8澳洲幸运5开奖网:genre-changing mechanics in the Nemesis System, but played fast a𒁏nd loose with the lore to say the least. Return to Moria is lore-conscious to the extreme, practically adding citations in your notebook as you traipse through the caverns underneath the Misty Mountains. However, the gameplay൩ loop isn’t engaging and the game drags for it.
This is a competent survival game, adding nothing to a formula long since perfected by games like Subnautica, games that it falls far short of. It relies on the pull of Tolkien to keep players pushing through, otherwise it would be all too easy to give up on your mission and do something else, anything but mining. There are moments of magic, like when your team of dwarves begin to sing, deep harmonies echoing off the cavernous walls. But these moments are too few and far between, and the lore can only tak🍸e you so far. As a space to hang out with fantasy-minded friends, Return to Moria is a nice jaunt. I just wish there was something more to do than swing this damn pickaxe at another damn wall.
