The opening area of the game, Emerald Vale, serves as a great place to stretch your legs. It introduces you to some basic gameplay mechanics, but it also gives you a chance to find some𝓀 great early-game items. Here’s some of that gear you’re going to want to grab as soon as you can.

10 Blad o♓n Stik

The Outer Worlds Blad on Stik

A unique melee ✨weapon, “Blad on a Stik” can be found as part of the Fist Full of Digits quest given to you by Constable Reyes, located in the town of Edgwater. The weapon can be found on Doc Maybell after killing her as part of the quest.

Blad on a Stikꦛ is a powerful two-handed melee weapoᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚ⁤⁤⁤⁤ᩚ⁤⁤⁤⁤ᩚ⁤⁤⁤⁤ᩚ𒀱ᩚᩚᩚn, dealing 59 damage per swing, and 52 damage per second. The standard Trip-Blade, which Blad is based on, only deals 50 damage with 44 damage per second. So if you’re playing a melee-focused character, or are just running low on ammo, you’ll want to go for this weapon early.

9 Fiver

The Outer Worlds Fiver

Fiver is a unique pistol that’s super easy to get. All you have to do is buy it from Stefan Garcia in the Botanical Gardens. Though it is rather expensive for a pistol, with a value of around 3,600 bits. Still, this will be the best pistol you’ll have for quite so♎me time, and you can get it really early.

It’s hard to top the 70 damage, 175 damage per second, and the quick reload time. Best of all, it has a knockback ability th💙at can stun e🍃nemies. It also supports a sight modification to make aiming easier.

8 🌳 Landing Pad Cutter

The Outer Worlds Landing Pad

If going on a quest to kill a bunch of marauders to get Bl𝔍ad on a Stick is too much work for you, you might instead want to pick up the Landing pad Cutter. Do you want to talk about easy? To get this two-handed melee weapon, all you have to do is go to Edgewater’s landing pad and pick it up. 🥃It’s not even stealing.

It’s not much different from the standard Tremor Cleaver, having the same base attack damage. But unlike the Tremor, it causes Bleed on enemies. It also supports the Mr. Power modification, which changꩲes the attack type to Plasma.

7 Ol’ Reliable ꦕ

The Outer Worlds Ol Reliable

Ol’ Reliable is a variant of the Light Machine Gun Mk 2, and like the Landing Pad Cutter🌃, it’s pretty easy to obtain. All you have to do is le🧜g it to the Primal Nest, northeast of the Emerald Vale Community Center and fight off a few Primals.

Ol’ Reliable is a heavy machine gun (which counter-intuitively takes Light ammo) with a base🌜 attack of 30 damage, and 429 damage per second. Interestingly, that’s nowhere near as good as the Light Machine Gun Mk 2, which deals a base damage of 58. But what makes this weapon special is in the name – its max condition is over 10 times higher than the Light Machine Gun, meaning it’ll last a long time.

6 Whisper Quiet Muzzler ✱

Sultuna Cannery Saltuna

The Whisper Quiet Muzzler isn’t a unique item, and it’s not even all that rare or expensive. But it's still a power weapon modification that can make you🦂r life much easier, and you can get one for free pretty early.

There’s one inside a Bullets ‘N Things vending machine at Edgewat☂er Landing Pad if you want to actually pay for one like some “upstanding citizen.” Or, you can just take one! Hidden 🔴in a container inside the Saltuna Cannery in Edgewater. Whether or not it spawns is random, but if you’re desperate, you can load a previous save and look again if you were unlucky.

5 Shoc🦩k-stick ꦯ

The Outer Worlds Shock-stick

The Shock-stick is a unique melee weapon given to you by Ludwig Miller, for completing the quest ‘Die, Robot.’ You can find him (like so many other of these items) at the Edgewater Landing Pa🀅d.

The Shock-stick is a variation of the stun baton, and while it’s base damage is the same, it swings much faster, so it deals more damage per second. Admittedly, its usefulness is limited, but getting it is easy, and with a melee build, the increased swing speed (coupled with a SpeedGrip mod) could make i🅠t a devastating weapon.

4 🅘 Long Ranger 🍷

The Outer Worlds Botanical Labs
The Outer Worlds Botanical Labs

The Long Ranger is a variant of the hunting rifle tha🐷t you can only get by killing Grace Romero, an Edgewater deserter standing guard over the Botanical Labs. It’s a big ask, since killing her will make the rest of the des💖erts turn on you, but the Long Ranger is a seriously impressive early-game weapon.

With a base of 90 attack damage, a faster rate of fire, and further range than the standard hunting rifle, this could be an effective sniper rifle you keep around for a long portion of the game. The only drawback is you can’t attach a magazine m𒐪od to it, but that’s no big deal.

3 🅰 🌞 Reed’s Hat

The Outer Worlds Reed's hat

Reed’s Hat can obviously only be obtained from Reed Tobson, mayor of the town of Edgewater🔯. On top of that, you can only get it by killing Reed – something you can only do while Edgewater still has power, otherwise, Reed leaves and is never seen again.

The benefit of the hat goes without saying – it gives you +7 to dialog, a huge boost to anyone playing a character who likes to talk their way out of s🌼ituations. It’s also the second-highest dialog boosting item in the game, behind only the Chimaera armor you get much later.

2 Maxwell

The Outer Worlds Maxwell

Maxwell is a variant of the impact hammer, and despite the name, it has nothing to do with Vicar Max, who’s also located in Emerald Vale. Instead, Maxwell is a reference to the Beatles song “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer,” as the item’s description reaℱds “For some reason, you think this hammer should be silver.”

The hammer can be purchased from Julius Moreau in the Emerald Vale General Store. Its base damage of 63 is a big improvement over the🥀 impact hammer’s 45, and it swings fasꦇter for higher damage per second.

1 🃏 Peacekeeper 🧸

The Outer Worlds Peacekeeper

Peacekeeper can only be obtained by pickpocketing or in Edgewater. It’s a variant of the sawed-off🗹 shotgun, and as you probably guessed, it’s much better.

Peacekeeper fires 10 shots per blast, less than the 12 of the sawed-off, but each hit causes 17 damage instead of 12 and has a higher damage per second output. Otherwise, there’s nothing special about this shotgun, other than it’s worth more than the standard variant. Plus, you can get it for free, and not get the whole town to hate you iౠf you can steal it from Reyes without getting caught.
