Who doesn't want to role-play as a starship captain? Mass Effect granted this desire, putting players behind the helmet of Commander Shepard. Mass Effect is an extinct series at the moment however, thanks to the failure of Mass Effect: Andromeda. Last year's The Outer Worlds picked up the slack. Developed by Obsidian Entertainment, The Outer Worlds was released in 2019 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. The game saw positive reception, even being nominated for Game of the Year at The Game Awards. Late last year, it was revealed The Outer Worlds would be coming to Nintendo Switch, allowing more players to check out the adventure. While it's certainly great to have it on Switch, The Outer Worlds port comes with technical issues.
The Outer Worlds was 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:reviewed in-depth last year for PS4, so the discussion on how the game works and the story will be brief. Played from a first-person perspective, players control "the Stranger," a colonist woken from hibernation by a man named Phineas Welles. Our mission is liberation for the other colonists in order ✨to save the collapsing Halcyon sys൩tem from the Board. Armed with just a small firearm at the start, players will acquire new weapons, and even become the captain of a crew, should players decide to recruit the people they come into contact with.
Quality Role-Playing Has Arrived On Switch
From the onset, players looking to role-play are in for a treat. Character customiza꧃tion runs deep, even picking what kind of aptitude the character has. From there, players will have to make different choices regar🦩ding what they want to do with their character.
A role-playing game needs to create a world where decisions matter. The Outer Worlds succeeds here. The player feels like they are influencing how the story is playing out, especially with decisions affecting others. Early on, players have to consider either diverting power to a town controlled by the Board, or give the power to the dissenters' community, knowing it will run the main town dry. Another good one is deciding whether to get all the materials needed, knowing it will kill off human test subjects. It's things like these that make The Outer Worlds truly enjoyable.
There are a lot of weapons throughout, with four slots to play around with. Shotguns, assault rifles, hammers, and more will be available across the campaign. Those who like weapon variety will have a blast. Sadly, the actual combat isn't as engaging as Mass Effect. It's still decent, but the story is where the game shines.
A fun combat ability is being able to slow down time. This "Tactical Time Dilation" is invaluable in getting out of tricky situations and killing off enemies. It can be upgraded, along wit🙈h other attributes. Will you upgrade your stealth, perception, or medical knowledge? There are plenty of things to consider when playing.
The Outer Worlds is elevated by the characters. The first character players can recruit is Parvati, an upbeat mechanic. Players have the freedom to recruit or no🌱t, adding to the realism of a captain only𒐪 recruiting those he/she wants on the team.
While not too long of an RPG, there are side-quests to accomplish for those wanting the complete Outer Worlds experience.
Expect Issues
It's no secret Nintendo's consoles are weaker than its competitors. Even so, one expects a good level of quality between ports. The Outer Worlds is not a perfect port. As seen in the above picture, there were instances where the game paused to buffer. This is not something that should be happening on a modern console, weak or not. Textures can have a problem loading right away. At the Botanical Lab area, a whole group of NPCs didn't load up promptly. I also noticed performance taking a hit when going through the alien planet early on. Graphically, don't expect the game to look amazing on Switch.
The Outer Worlds is certainly still playable on Switch, but these technical issues prevent it from being as ✅great as it cou🔴ld have been. Another issue, though not Switch-specific this time, are the loading screens. Every time you enter a major area, a loading screen plays. You will see these a lot. The game would have benefited from seamless transitions.
Not The Best Port For A Good Game
The Outer Worlds is an engaging outer space RPG. As the Stranger, you have the ability to bring change to the Halcyon system. There are many dialogue decisions to make, from persuading a peaceful resolution, to simply going on the attack. Combat may not be the best, but there is a nice array of weapons to choose from. If one only has the Switch, it's still worth playing. But, with the technical issues, it's better to play it on other consoles.
A Switch review code for The Outer Worlds was provided to TheGamer for this review. The Outer Worlds is avaiꦇlable now for Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
