Building in the Sims is a unique way to play, giving you a chance to construct, decorate and furnish a hous🤪e from the ground up, or just simply furnish or renovate an existing lot. If you want to start learning how to build in The Sims 4 then this guide covers the very basics of resizing, moving, rotating, and placing furniture items in both PC and Console versions.

How To Enter Build Mode

There are two ways to enter build mode, using the world map, and through a household. Which way you use will depend on if you want to just build, or if you want to create or edit something for a household.

Building From The World Map

Navigate to the world of your choice on the map, then select the lot you want to edit. When it is selected you'll see three icons in the bottom right corner. The person with and arrow next to them takes you to create a sim, the car lets you visit the lot, and the hammer and spanner takes you to build mode.

If you select the hammer and spanner on any lot you will be able to go in and build from scratch, or renovate any existing buildings. There are no budget restrictions here, but the cost of the lot will change to reflect your edits once you save and exit. If a household lives on the lot, then editing their house this way currently allows you to make any adjustments you like without it affecting the household's finances.

If you save and exit before going back into the occupied lot via the Play button you can sell anything you added to the lot and the refund value goes into your Sim's household funds, essentially creating an alternative money cheat. Kaching!

Building From Live Mode

If you want your renovations to be realistic then enter the household using the triangle button marked Play. This will put you into live mode. From here you can click the same hammer and wrench icon, but this time it is in the top right corner.

You'll now be in build mode, except this time anything you buy is subtracted from your household funds. This means items you cannot afford will have a red background to indicate this.

Build mode functions exactly the same way, whichever way you enter it. The only difference is that if a household occupies the lot already, then entering through the map directly means you can cheat the household finances.

How To Place Furniture

Sims 4 Item selected to be moved

Placing furniture is super easy. All you need to do is use your mouse or direction buttons to hover the cursor over the item you want in the build and buy catalogue. Once you've found it select the item using the left mouse button on PC, A on Xbox or X on PlayStation.

Selected items will stick to the cursor, so you can move them around anywhere you like. You can even click on the buttons to change floors with furniture in your hand. The furniture will be placed when you hover over a valid tile and hit select again.

To toggle the grid display on and off press G on PC, press down the right stick on Xbox or hit R3 on PlayStation.

When you are over a valid tile there will be a green box around the item, showing it can be placed there. If the box is red then something is in the way. This system helps ensure houses are designed so that Sims can path find around them more easily by not allowing items to be layered together, unless designed tha🍎t way, eg a shelf slot for clutter.

To pick up an item from your build hover over it, you'll see a white glow around it once you've got the cursor in the right place, then choose select to freely move it again.

How To Move Furniture More Precisely

Sims 4 table selected and moving around grid

By default, all items will snap to the grid and be placed in line with it. However, you can drag an item around the immediate grid. This is called live drag, and allows you to place items slightly off-center, closer to an item next to them etc. Using this mode you won't be able to drag the item out of the grid that it's in, but you can have more control.

To enable live drag, first select the item and then hold down the appropriate button while moving it with your mouse or direction keys. On PC, you'll need to hold Alt, the Xbox uses X, and the PlayStation uses square. This allows you to place the item more freely. It also allows you to move doors and windows from their default position.

If you want complete free placement on PC you'll need to use the move objects cheat which removes the grid restrictions completely, allowing items to overlap. On Xbox, the left trigger will toggle between grid, half grid, and free object placement, a function accessed by pressing L2 on the PlayStation.

To enable cheats press control+shift+c on PC/Mac or all four shoulder buttons simultaneously on console to bring up a text box. Type in testingcheats on followed by Enter/A/X. You should see a confirmation message. In the same box type bb.moveobjects on then Enter/A/X. This enables the move objects cheat and⭕ gives you mor♏e freedom to place and move items.

How To Move Items Up And Down

On PC, you can move items up and down using the 0 and 9 keys. This is especially useful for things like mirrors. You can also use it to move clutter items onto shelves at different angles and sometimes into places you can't usually put them if you also use live drag.

On console, you'll need to enable the move objects cheat and then select your item. Pressing both triggers and up/down changes the item elevation on Xbox while L2 and R2 as well as up/down does the same for PlayStation.

How To Rotate Furniture

Sims 4 rotated chairs

With your furniture selected, there are a couple of ways to rotate it. On the PC the easiest is to hold down the left mouse button and then rotate the item by moving the mouse. However, this only works in Sims 3 Camera mode, otherwise it just moves the camera.

The alternative option, available in both camera modes, is to press the comma and full stop buttons on the keyboard, with each one rotating in the direction of the triangle brackets on the keys. On Xbox select the item and then use LB or RB to rotate, or if you are on PlayStation the buttons are L1 and R1.

For more precise rotation, if using Sims 3 Camera, you can also hold down Alt as well as the left mouse button. Those on Xbox can press LB/RB at the same time while rotating with the right stick. For PlayStation, it's L1/R1 together and the right stick to rotate.

How To Make Furniture Bigger And Smaller

Sims 4 resized plant

Some items look great but just aren't the right size. To change the size of items simply press [ and ] on PC. If you are on console you need to press both triggers on the Xbox or L2 and R2 on the PlayStation. You'll then be able to

Just be aware that unless you have the moveobjects cheat on the item will still take up the same amount of grid spots so may clash with other items. Interactions and animations will also remain unchanged, so some items don't resize well.

The best items to resize include: Rugs, Plants, Lights and other decor items. You can also resize the dolls houses as the animation mostl𒉰y takes place outside the house and still looks ok with the size change.
