You must talk to Yaromir before the auction. He will challenge Geralt's knowledge of art by asking him to identify a painter's work. The current answer is the merchant painting.

Getting The Painting
When the auction begins, you will be able to bid on the painting. It will be the only work of art on the auction and will be hard to miss. If you did not tell Vimme about it, you will win with 20 crowns. Otherwise, you will have to beat his bid, costing you 60 crowns.
After leaving the auction, take the painting to Marcus T.K. Hodgson's bookshop in Novigrad. He will eagerly exchange the painting for 500 gold and a Conserved Shaelmaar Trophy.
