Geralt's payout is subject to change depending on how he happens upon the blight in this town and his negotiations with both his c♎ontractor and the Byways villagers.
Where To Pick Up The Mystery of The Byways Murders Quest
A little piece of paper isn't stopping the monster from wreaking havoc on the village, so contract or not, Geralt may happen upon the carnage taking place at the town of Byways, just southwest of Fyke Isle in Velen. But if you should find yourself in Oreton before venturing through Byways, you can stop by the notice board to pick up the Contract: Missing Soldiers, which will point our famous Witcher to commander Milan Noran for further information.
How To Get The Best Reward
You can report to Milan after his dealings in Byways if you picked up the contract off the notice board in Oreton beforehand. However, by not speaking with Milan about the contract prior to investigating the town, you'll miss your opportunity to haggle for a better payout. If Geralt haggles, he can earn up to 195 Crowns — opposed to the original 146 Crowns posted for the job, along with 300 experience either way.
This complicated path to the best possible reward has another wrinkle: if you don't speak with Milan first, you may miss out on additional compensation from the shifty locals who stirred up troub✤le𒐪 with the beast in the first place — but not necessarily.
Negotiating a contract with Milan before heading to Byways to investigate the murders will only prevent you from getting the most from the townsfolk if you do not hide the fact that Geralt's being paid, in which case the locals will still reward Geralt with 25 experience and an additional 210 Crowns.
Phew. That's a lot. Most quests in The Witcher 3 don't go out ൩of their way quite so much to make you work for your loot, but at lea🤪st you're guaranteed something nice even if you don't get it all.
Navigating The Town And Townsfolk
Dispatching the ghouls running amok in Byways will trigger a cutscene introducing the locals, who are clearly hiding something. Here Geralt can choose to respect their wishes and be on his way, still collecting the agreed upon contract payment from Milan but foregoing further payment from the villagers.

This is also where Geralt can divulge or omit the fact he is under contract (if he already m꧙ade an arrangement with Milan.) But by simply having him admit his nosiness and prying a little further, Geralt can use his Witcher senses to search the town.
The key objective here is to pick up a scent trail off of a couple of corpses and follow it to a house. This will trigger another cutscene with the villager, Bytomir, who will eventually confess there are secret t🎃unnels beneath the village where the locals wound up disturbing a monster as they mined the passages for treasure.
After getting the key from Bytomir, it takes a little more inspection inside the cabin to deduce that Geralt is dealing with an Ekimmara; a species of vampire. There are some loose floorboards in the cabin, which you can inteꦰracಌt with to reach a below-ground tunnel. Head forward here for a moment or two, and you'll come upon the vampire itself.
How To Beat Sarasti
The Sarasti boss f🙈ight comes at you in a flash and can seem extremely daunting; being the first 🔴encounter with a creature of its vampiric likeness in the game. Still, stunning speed is Sarasti's only real advantage, and she can be easily combated when proper preparations are made.
First things first, prepare for the encounter by coating that silver blade in Vampire Oil and throwing back some Black Blood so if she does lꦜand a bite, the vampire gets a taste of her own poison. Due to the close quarters, you will be forced to fight within. Considering the Ekimmara's legendary vampiric speed, Geralt should have Quen at the ready as well — preferably the explosive active variation.
Then it's all about well-timed dodges and finding an opening to throw Sarasti out of her flow. If Geralt is unrelenting with his use of fast attacks, it will be hard for Sarasti to regain the upper h♐and.
